1990 JAGUAR XJS 3.6 COUPE

This Jaguar XJS 3.6 Coupe is a smart classic coupe, which is presented in very good condition and benefits from an impressive service history. Under the bonnet is the 3.6-litre AJ6 straight-six, coupled to a four-speed ZF automatic transmission.

First registered on 17 September 1990, there are six previous registered keepers on the log book. The current owner acquired the car eight years ago, and has kept the car very well maintained. He is now offering it for sale at No Reserve.

Today, the body presents in good order, with impressive shut lines and panel gaps in the photos below, and there is no known accident damage. Its Arctic Blue paintwork is described as being in very good condition. The seller believes the paint on the upper body is original, while it has had some fresh paint to the lower sections where corrosion has been cut out and repaired to a high standard. It rides on the original 15-inch ‘Lattice’ alloy wheels, which look smart, with only minor blemishes.

In the cabin, the seller notes that the driver’s seat is worn and would benefit from minor repairs and re-connolising. The rest of the beige leather presents well, as can be seen from the extensive set of photos below. The carpets are also worn in places, and there is some cracking in the centre console wood. Overall, the interior looks good for a 30-year-old car, and conveys the character of a highly original and honest classic.

The seller notes that the rev counter fitted does not currently work, but that a spare working item is supplied with the car. The air-conditioning blower also runs only on maximum speed, though otherwise it works as it should, having been re-gassed in July 2020. Finally, the seller states that the brake/ABS warning light sometimes momentarily flashes upon applying the brakes, though this has never been noted as an issue by the mechanic and the brakes pull the car up very well.

The last scheduled maintenance took place in July 2020 at 97,198 miles, carried out by Steve Cato Restoration Ltd in Kings Lynn. This consisted of an engine oil and filter service, top up of all other fluids, cleaning the brakes, and attending to some corrosion on the offside rear wheel arch. Prior to this, the car was serviced in April 2019, along with new spark plugs, battery and a new headlining; and in April 2018 when the rear brake pads were replaced, along with the differential oil and thermostat. During the latter, the rear lower quarters were also repaired and coated with stone chip paint, and new rear exhaust sections were installed.

During the seller’s ownership, various patches of lower body corrosion have been attended to and painted to a high standard, new door seals and a new windscreen seal have been fitted, and the fuel tank has been replaced. It has also received new shock absorbers on all four corners, with new coil springs at the front, and with new polyurethane bushes for improved durability but retaining the original ride quality. Power steering hoses and reinforced coolant hoses have been renewed, along with the front brake pads, and the steering rack rubber gaiters. The cylinder head has also been skimmed and fitted with a new gasket.

The most recent MOT test was on 20 July 2020 at 97,198 miles, when it achieved a first-time pass with no advisories – and the only MOT advisories or fails since 2014 related to tyres, bulbs and windscreen wipers. The tyres are all matching and period-correct Pirelli P600 items, which were fitted in 2017 and have covered just 4,000 miles since then, so remain in excellent condition with ample tread.

Accompanying this Jaguar XJ-S is the original handbook and the stamped service booklet, as well as a raft of service history paperwork from the previous and current ownership. A nearly complete tool kit is also present, with a non-original jack.

This Jaguar XJ-S 3.6 Coupe is reported to be a straight and solid example of a popular practical classic, and certainly looks very smart in the detailed set of photos below. The service history is very impressive, and points towards this car being a cherished and well-maintained example. It is said to be running smoothly, ready to drive and enjoy as intended - whether that is a local jaunt on a Sunday morning, or a much longer road trip across the continent.
