1990 FORD FIESTA RS TURBO

This Ford Fiesta RS Turbo is a largely original example of the iconic hot hatch from the 1990s. It is powered by a 1.6-litre turbocharged inline-four engine coupled to a five-speed manual transmission driving the front wheels. The odometer indicates 66,860 miles.

First registered on 19 September 1990, this RS Turbo remained within the same family ever since the third keeper passed away, though it now shows eight previous keepers. Having been garaged throughout the majority of its known lifetime, the vendor states that this Fiesta has never been welded, with the sills, floors and boot being the original items. In addition to this, it was also optioned with the desirable anti-lock braking system, and retains the original belt-driven system which was often removed.

The paintwork is in generally good order for its age, and is believed to be original. Today, there are some small pin dents around the filler cap and on the doors and front wings. In addition to this, there are rust bubbles on the front scuttle panel, boot lid and battery tray, clearly shown in the photo gallery, along with the expected smattering of stone chips to the front end and exposed edges.

Inside, the Recaro front seats – a feature of the RS Turbo models – are in excellent shape, retaining their tight figure-hugging bolsters, though the centres are beginning to sag a little. The door cards, too, are in good condition with only a few small marks, though the lower half of the driver’s door card in particular is beginning to show signs of age. The sunroof works as it should with no leaks reported, and the carpets are still in great shape with the pedals retaining the original Ford rubber coverings. The vendor notes that the boot release button is inoperable and the battery light is on due to a faulty alternator, but otherwise there are no known faults.

The most recent maintenance took place in February 2018, which comprised of a major service carried out by AJ Autos. Prior to this, in April 2017 this Fiesta received a full service including a new cam belt and water pump, with further work before this being carried out by previous owners themselves. During their ownership, the vendor has fitted a new battery. As with many hot hatches, this example has been mildly modified with lowered suspension, a stainless steel exhaust, and turbo blow-off valve.

As the car has been in storage for around three years, it will require a fresh MOT certificate before returning to the road – though the last test in February 2017 at 66,696 miles resulted in a first-time pass with only one advisory for slight play in the offside front suspension arm ball joint. The vendor notes that the clutch master cylinder is showing evidence of weeping, so this may well need to be replaced.

In largely original condition, this 1990 Fiesta RS Turbo is a smart example of the ‘90s hot hatch, which is free from welding and has only a few reversible modifications. With some light cosmetic refurbishment and a fresh MOT on the to-do list, this could be a great opportunity for someone looking to dip their toe into fast Ford ownership and improve the car over time, or to add to an existing collection.
