1990 BMW (E30) 320I CONVERTIBLE

KEY FACTS

  • This is a well-preserved example of the E30 generation BMW 3 Series Convertible, which benefits from a very good service history.
  • Power comes from an M20 2.0-litre straight-six engine producing 125bhp and 121lb-ft of torque, mated to a four-speed automatic gearbox driving the rear wheels.
  • The car was supplied new in April 1990, and has been in the possession of its current owner for six years. It remains in highly original condition.

EQUIPMENT AND FEATURES

  • This ‘chrome bumper’ 320i is finished in Atlantis Blue with a dark blue soft-top. It sits on 15-inch BBS ‘Style 5’ alloy wheels and Pirelli P600 tyres.
  • Inside, front sport seats are fitted, with beige leather upholstery and matching door card and rear quarter trims, and with a black dashboard and centre console.
  • A wood finish aftermarket gear lever has been installed, and the original factory item is also included in the sale.
  • It is equipped with a modern Kenwood stereo head unit with DAB digital radio capability.
  • The car’s original wind deflector is also present, along with the original boot-stored toolkit, car jack, warning triangle, spare and wheel brace. The BMW branded glove box torch is also included.
  • The owner’s manual, service book and BMW service directory are included, plus the original plastic wallet.
  • Accompanying the car is a strong service history record, with an array of receipts and previous MOT certificates.

CONDITION

  • There is no reported body damage, although the owner believes the rear bumper was repaired or replaced early in the life of the car.
  • The soft-top is in good original condition, with minimal marks and opens and closes as it should.
  • The paintwork is believed to be original and is in good overall condition. There are a few minor marks on the lower offside panels; some contact grazes on the lower driver’s door and the panel behind it, and small stone chips as you would expect around the front end.
  • The interior trim and upholstery is also assumed to be as it left the factory, and is in impressive order for its age, showing only modest wear and slight ageing of the leather.
  • There are signs of previous interior modifications that have left slight glue residue marks on the glovebox and gear stick surround. The bottom of the rear seats also has tape residue where the wind deflector has been held in place.
  • No known mechanical or electrical faults, other than intermittent operation of the offside rear electric window.
  • The car passed its last MOT test on 23 August 2021 at 97,678 miles with advisories for wear to the rear brake discs, and slight wear in the front anti-roll bar bushing.

SERVICE HISTORY

  • The last service was performed in September 2020 at 97,700 miles; with work completed including an oil change, new brake discs and pads, and a replacement battery.
  • Prior to this, an oil change was completed in January 2016 at 91,629 miles, along with the replacement of the windscreen washer pump and adjustment to the offside window.
  • The car has a good service history and has been maintained by BMW and Porsche main dealers, specialists and independent garages.
  • Its camshaft timing belt was last renewed at 74,089 miles.

SUMMARY

This E30-era BMW 320i Convertible is a highly original and unmolested example – increasingly hard to find with this type of car. It is offered in good order throughout, and would benefit from only minor cosmetic and maintenance work as highlight above. For an enthusiast who wants a smart modern classic that is affordable to buy and run, this 320i would make an excellent choice that could even be driven every day.
