1989 VOLKSWAGEN GOLF (MK2) GTI 16V

This 1989 Volkswagen Golf GTI (MK2) is a wonderfully original, low-owner example of Wolfsburg’s iconic second-generation hot hatch, finished in the timeless combination of red over a black cloth interior. Powered by a 1.8-litre, 16v inline-four engine coupled to a manual gearbox, this example shows 56,400 miles on the odometer.

First registered on 31 January 1989 and with three former keepers on the log book, this UK-supplied Golf has been in the care of the vendor for the last eight years, during which time it has been regularly maintained and kept in its original condition, with the exception of an upgraded Blaupunkt stereo.

The paintwork is believed to be original, and presents in fantastic condition given the age and mileage of the car. There is a small patch of bubbling around the rear towing eye, which is a common occurrence on these vehicles, along with the usual smattering of stone chips on the front end. The black plastic arches and bumper trims have faded over time, but add to the car’s patina. The standard ‘bottle top’ alloys have been upgraded to a set of BBS items which are in good condition, and the original wheels are included in the sale. The glass is of particular note, with all window panes still being the original items and bearing the registration mark of the vehicle.

The interior presents in good condition throughout, and is again believed to be the original interior, and has never been re-trimmed or refurbished to the vendor’s knowledge. The Recaro front seats in particular show some bolster wear, in particular on the driver’s seat as you would expect, though this is commensurate with the age of the vehicle. The carpets, steering wheel, gear knob and other main contact points are in great condition.

The most recent maintenance took place in December 2014 at 54,310 miles and was carried out by Classic Heroes. This was a regular service, comprising of the usual oil and fluid changes. Recently, the vehicle has had attention to the rear wiper mechanism, boot lock and distributor cap during 2020, which was all carried out by Wellbrook motor services. The cam belt was last replaced in 2013, and in 2014 the car also received a full professional Waxoyl treatment to the underside.

The last MOT test took place on 1 March 2021, and resulted in a clean pass with no advisories on the first attempt. All four tyres are date-coded 2009, and have approximately 5mm of tread remaining. A plethora of paperwork for servicing and sundry items is present with the vehicle, along with the original VW book pack, service history with 18 stamps, radio user manual and the original owner’s manual.

A remarkably original example of VW’s iconic hot hatch, this 1989 VW Golf GTI is in impressive order throughout. With solid history and benefitting from a full Waxoyl treatment, this Golf GTI would make a fine addition to any enthusiast’s collection, and a great candidate for further preservation.
