1989 PORSCHE 911 CARRERA 3.2 CLUB SPORT

This 1989 Porsche 911 Carrera 3.2 Club Sport is a very smart example of a model lauded as one of the marque’s finest driver’s cars – and is one of just 53 built in right-hand drive. Powered by a blueprinted version of the 3.2-litre air-cooled flat-six engine, coupled to a five-speed close-ratio Getrag G50 manual transmission, this example is presented in excellent condition and has covered 92,121 miles.

No longer the best-kept secret in classic 911s; the Club Sport model has become an incredibly desirable variant due to its pure driving experience. With extensive weight saving over the standard Carrera 3.2, revised suspension and the aforementioned blueprinted engine paired to a close-ratio variant of the G50 gearbox and limited-slip differential, this well-honed model is now a sought-after collector car.

First registered on 31 March 1989, this Club Sport is a genuine C16-code UK market car – from a total production run of only 340 cars built between August 1987 and September 1989. This particular 911 is also a confirmed matching numbers example, and is in great condition.

The car has been owned by the vendor for more than four years, in which time approximately 5,000 miles have been covered. The car was subject of a thorough 230-point inspection by Anthony Shearer of Porsche Inspections on 23 June 2020, which is available for interested parties to view.

Having been subject of a prior respray in the correct Grand Prix White, the paintwork presents excellently today with only minor stone chips and very few light scratches. The car has also had some remedial paintwork earlier this year. Early in the car's life, the nearside rear wing was damaged and replaced – as the Porsche Inspections report shows. There was an insurance claim on this, and at some point a notation was included on the car's history report. However, the car's current HPI report shows that it is fully clear in this respect, with no insurance notations for any damage. The 16-inch ‘Fuchs’ alloy wheels are in good condition, with only minor blemishes.

The interior is in great shape, with the independent report specifically mentioning that “the delicate seat material is in remarkably good condition”. A half roll cage has been fitted, which is an easily removable bolt-in item, with the carpets slightly cut to accommodate this. The car is sold with the original, and rare, rear storage shelf and the original steering wheel – both in good condition – as the car is currently fitted with a Momo rim in place of the latter.

The inspection report includes mechanical checks, which not only confirms this car as matching numbers but also indicates that it is in sound mechanical health. The car has been lightly modified with the fitment of uprated Boxster brakes, stronger front suspension bushings, a strut brace and wheel spacers. As stated in the inspection these can easily be removed or changed back at the new owner’s discretion. The suspension is all in good order, as is the braking system. The report noted a slightly sticking rear brake caliper, but this has now been fixed.

While the car had no issue starting several times, and was reported to run well with normal temperature and pressure readings on a test drive up to 50mph, the report advised replacement of the battery, which has subsequently been re-conditioned. The road test concluded that the engine pulled strongly, with clutch and gearbox operating well, and no unusual rattles or vibrations were reported.

The car was most recently serviced by Porsche specialist Car-Tech in North Yorkshire in June 2020 at 92,099 miles. New rear discs and pads were fitted, and the rear screen sealed to resolve a leak. The two prior services were also carried out by the same specialist, with a service in May 2019 at 91,928 miles and a major service in March 2016 at 87,626 miles.

This Porsche 911 Carrera 3.2 Club Sport is a very good example of one of the most coveted special-edition models from the Stuttgart marque. It is presented in sound condition, as evidenced by the extensive Porsche Inspections report from June 2020, and comes with lots of paperwork dating back to the mid-1990s for both parts and servicing. This is a true connoisseur’s 911, which is ready to be relished on the road, and which is surely a must-have model for any major Porsche collection.
