1989 PEUGEOT 205 GTI 1.9 - FULLY RESTORED

This Peugeot 205 GTI 1.9 is a prime example of the benchmark hot hatch of the 1980s. With its 126bhp 1.9-litre engine and lightweight bodyshell offering a driving experience that surpasses the sum of its parts, today it is a sought-after modern classic full of character and brisk performance. This first-generation example is fresh from a full restoration and would be a superb addition to any collection.

First registered on 17 August 1989, this 205 GTI has been owned by the vendor the past six years. It now shows 355 miles on the odometer, which is the mileage since the restoration, which included a full engine rebuild. The total mileage from new is approximately 132,000 miles.

Presented in a crisp white finish, the body remains fresh from its full thorough refurbishment and new paintwork. Close inspection shows a highly detailed vehicle with a deep glossy appearance to the panels, punctuated by plastic trim that is all in very good order. A 1980s Fido Dido bumper sticker is a nod to this car’s cultural context.

Fitted with the optional factory sunroof, this 205 GTI looks resplendent with its original wheels restored to the same exacting high standards as the rest of the bodywork. Inspection of the engine bay shows great attention to detail, with a genuinely immaculate factory-fresh appearance.

The interior trim presents as well as the exterior, where all of the seats have been reupholstered in the original pattern and now look pristine. Seat bolsters remain in excellent condition following restoration, with the owner pointing out only minor wear to the steering wheel. Featuring electric windows, the vendor reports that all controls and switches are working correctly across the well-presented dashboard, albeit with a non-locking glovebox – though it still opens and closes as it should. Clean red carpets and cabin trim help to transport you back to the ‘80s, while the boot continues the theme with clean plastics and carpeting.

With a full engine rebuild completed in August 2019, featuring fresh oil, fluids and consumables, no further servicing has been required since. It is in excellent mechanical order as you would expect.

The most recent MOT test was on 12 June 2020 at 318 miles since the restoration, with no advisories. The Pirelli Cinturato P6 tyres are in excellent condition having covered only a few hundred miles. The car retains the original and unmodified specification, with the exception of a full Milltek stainless steel exhaust system.

Supplied with part service history and some original books acquired during the restoration, there is also a first aid kit, jack and wheel brace.
