1989 PEUGEOT 205 GTI 1.9 LIMITED EDITION

This Peugeot 205 GTI 1.9 is a fantastic example of the famously nimble Gallic hot hatch, finished in the Limited Edition combination of Sorrento Green with a grey leather interior, and presented in very good order throughout. Under the bonnet is the naturally aspirated 1.9-litre four-cylinder engine, which produces 128bhp and drives the front wheels via the engaging five-speed manual transmission. The odometer indicates 96,907 miles from new.

First registered on 15 June 1990, this right-hand drive UK-market 205 GTI is one of the collectible Limited Edition cars. In total, 300 1.9-litre Sorrento Green cars were produced in 1990, along with a further 300 green 1.6-litre examples. 600 Miami Blue cars were also built, with the same split between the engines. The car was acquired by the vendor around two months ago, and has just four previous keepers on the V5C. It is only being offered for sale due to unexpected loss of garage space, so the car needs to be sold by March.

To the vendor’s knowledge, the bodywork has never suffered from any accident damage, and there are no signs of dents or other defects in the panels. It is believed that the handsome Sorrento Green metallic paintwork has been partly or fully resprayed at some stage, and it is in very good order, with the only reported defect being some minor bubbling close to the rear windscreen.

The exterior trim also presents well; however, the seller states that there is a crack in the plastic tailgate panel. This 205 GTI rides on the correct set of 15-inch alloy wheels, which feature some minor blemishes but are otherwise in excellent condition.

In the cabin, the front seats and split-folding rear bench are clad in smooth grey leather with red stitched accents, and present handsomely, with only slight creasing and a small mark on the driver’s outer bolster.

The trademark door cards are also in great shape, and while the stripe on the driver’s door has faded slightly, this is a common age-related issue. Furthermore, the grey carpeting is protected by a set of black over mats with red trim, and the steering wheel and gear knob show few signs of wear.

While the vendor states that the car’s radio does not work correctly and the boot light is not functioning, the rest of the interior buttons, switches and electrical items work as they should, and there are no warning lights displayed on the dashboard.

This French flier’s most recent routine maintenance was carried out in January 2021 at 96,898 miles by Church Road Garage, comprising a general service, including replacement of the engine oil and oil filter, brake fluid and coolant. The timing belt was also checked and all four tyres were replaced.

Prior to this, Peugeot dealer Truscotts Barnstaple carried out a full service in June 2017 at 95,642 miles. This comprised replacement of the cam belt and water pump, along with the distributor cap, rotor arm and spark plugs. Additionally, the engine oil, oil filter and oil pressure switch were changed, as well as the coolant and brake fluid. During the seller’s brief ownership the car’s heater matrix and central front lower engine mount have also been replaced

Its most recent MOT test was conducted on 12 January 2021 at 96,898 miles, resulting in a clean pass with no advisories. A week earlier, the car initially failed due to the nearside headlamp aim being too low, and a damaged front lower engine mount – but both items were subsequently fixed before the re-test. All four wheels are shod in Michelin Pilot Sport 3 tyres, which were fitted in January 2021 and remain in excellent condition, with nearly all of their original tread remaining.

This celebrated hot hatch will be accompanied by its original book pack including the owner’s handbook, service guide, stamped maintenance booklet, as well as a selection of invoices for past maintenance work. The car boasts an extensive service history, which is shown in the gallery below; and the vendor also notes that all old MOT certificates – apart from 2005 and 2006 – are included in the file. There are also two original keys, plus the original jack, wheel brace and spare wheel.

Widely appreciated as one of, if not the very best hot hatches of the late ‘80s and early ‘90s, the Peugeot 205 GTI 1.9 offers engaging handling and ample performance in a simple, lightweight package. Presented in impressive and unmodified condition, and benefitting from a recent service and set of tyres, this example is ready to take to the road and show its next owner precisely what makes the GTI such a widely sought-after modern classic.
