1989 PEUGEOT 205 CTI 1.6

KEY FACTS

  • A cherished example of Peugeot’s charming convertible ‘hot hatch’, the 205 CTI.
  • Under the bonnet sits a free-revving 1.6-litre inline-four, producing 115bhp and driving the front wheels via a five-speed manual transmission.
  • The car was first registered in May 1989 and was acquired by the seller approximately two years ago.
  • The previous owner kept the car for 12 years, was a member of the Peugeot club, and attended many events and shows with this car.

EQUIPMENT AND FEATURES

  • A product of Pininfarina design, the 205 CTI offers the sharp, engaging handling of its iconic GTI sibling, with the added pleasure of open-top motoring on sunny days.
  • This example is finished in white with a grey and red cloth interior.
  • Featuring late model smoked indicator lenses and a strut brace, which the vendor notes helps to reduce the typical scuttle shake often associated with older convertible cars.
  • It wears a set of 14-inch ‘Pepperpot’ alloy wheels, which are in good shape, having benefitted from a recent refurbishment. All four are shod in matching tyres.
  • The car is supplied with all its original handbooks, a part-stamped service book, a selection of service receipts covering the period from 1999 to the present day, and all MOTs dating back to 1994. The vendor is also including a breathable car cover with the sale of the car.

CONDITION

  • There is no known bodywork damage. A few small areas of corrosion are visible, predominantly under the bonnet, which the new owner may wish to address in due course.
  • The paintwork is in good condition overall, showing only a few blemishes commensurate with the car’s age, including very minor stone chips on the nose and a small scuff on the front valance. The vendor notes the car has been repainted at some point during its life.
  • The black convertible hood fits snugly over its frame, and is free of any rips or tears. The vendor notes that the rear windscreen was replaced during their ownership and as such is free of the creasing and hazing generally associated with older convertible hoods.
  • Inside, the upholstery and trim present well. The vendor notes a partial retrim of the front seats, and while there is some minor sagging present on the front seats and some wear on the radio surround, this is all in line with the car’s use and mileage.
  • The vendor notes that there is an intermittent fault with the oil pressure gauge sensor, but there are no other electrical or mechanical faults with the car.
  • The car was MOT tested on 27 August 2020 at 147,528 miles, resulting in the identification of two defects; the service brake efficiency was below requirements, and the rear brakes were imbalanced across an axle. Both of these issues have since been rectified by the owner and the car was retested on 5 November 2020 at 147,579 miles, resulting in a clean pass with no advisories.

SERVICE HISTORY

  • The 205’s most recent routine maintenance on record was an oil and filter, brake fluid, cam belt, tensioner and water pump change. All of this work was carried out in January 2017 by the previous owner, at 139,255 miles
  • The seller notes a history file on the car dating back 30 years is also present, which includes receipts for a replacement heater matrix, a new windscreen, new driveshafts, and a new gear linkage.

SUMMARY

This Peugeot 205 CTI 1.6 is an eminently usable modern classic. With its playful chassis, rev-happy engine, and the appeal of ‘wind-in-the-hair’ motoring, it is an ideal summer driver for any classic ‘hot hatch’ enthusiast. Presented in good working order, this example would benefit from a service and some minor cosmetic attention, but is ready to drive and enjoy.
