1989 JAGUAR XJ-S V12 CONVERTIBLE

This 1989 Jaguar XJ-S V12 Convertible is a refined classic cruiser, which has been kept in excellent mechanical condition. Under the bonnet sits the 295bhp 5.3-litre HE V12, coupled with a smooth automatic transmission. The odometer currently indicates 53,530 miles from new.

First registered in February 1989, this XJS has been in the hands of its current keeper for four years, and is offered for sale reluctantly due to the forthcoming ULEZ extension. It remains highly original, though the UK-market headlamps and surrounds have been replaced with dual-headlights from the US-market car, while the factory sound system has been replaced with a Pioneer stereo with Bluetooth connectivity, DAB radio and Morel speakers.

The elegant bodywork and Signal Red paintwork are both in good shape, though the vendor has noted a few minor blemishes, such as a couple of minor surface scratches, some very slight flaking underneath the offside wheel arches and some age-related stone chips to the nearside front. The car’s attractive grille and dual headlamps are both in good order, and the soft-top roof is in excellent order and fits very well – and of course the powered mechanism works perfectly. The vehicle rides on a set of 15-inch wheels, which have just a few light blemishes and some very slight discolouration to their centre caps.

Inside, the cream leather upholstery is believed to be entirely original, and therefore presents with some age-related cracks and creases, alongside some minor discolouration to the driver’s seat. The leather-clad door cards and centre console are both in great shape, while the walnut burr around the centre console has a few cracks. The cabin is equipped with heated seats with power lumbar support, electric wing mirrors and electric windows, and all of the switchgear is believed to work as it should. The original in-car telephone is functional, though is not currently connected to any network.

A new rear crank sensor was fitted in early 2021, while the last routine maintenance was undertaken in May 2020 at 51,163 miles, where technicians at Jag Shop in Chiswick replaced the battery, ECU, injector and ignition. Jag Shop also carried out maintenance in June 2019, while in March 2018, technicians at The Jaguar Workshop in Ealing carried out a top end service and fitted new cam cover gaskets, before replacing the engine oil, spark plugs, radius arms and wiper blades. The drive belts were last changed in August 2017 at 49,074 miles, where technicians also replaced the power steering hose, anti-roll bar link kit, headlamp bracket and handbrake finger, tab plate and pads. An aftermarket alarm system with remote activation and remote central locking has also been installed.

In the last four years, the vendor has spent some £8,350 on the car, which has also included fitment of an alarm with remote central locking, a Pioneer DAB head unit with up-to-date connectivity and Morel speakers all round, and the dual headlight conversion (with the originals included with sale).

The most recent MOT test was on 24 July 2020 at 51,238 miles, which resulted in a pass with three advisories to monitor a minor oil leak, a worn offside front tyre and a defective offside rear exhaust mounting, which has since been rectified. The car is fitted with four Pirelli P600 tyres, which are the original specification for the car, and are believed to be in good condition all round.

Accompanying the vehicle are the original handbook and stamped service book, along with a raft of maintenance invoices and MOT certificates. The original stereo, speakers and headlamps will also be supplied. The original black tonneau cover for the soft top hood is also included.

This Jaguar XJ-S is a sophisticated V12 convertible, which has benefited from regular maintenance and comes with an uprated stereo system. Specialist Jag Shop which has seen the car in recent years has remarked to the vendor that it is one of the best examples they have seen, especially in its particularly desirable colour scheme. With stylish bodywork and a smooth 12-cylinder engine, this classic drop-top would make a fine tourer for the warmer spring and summer weather.
