1988 PORSCHE 911 CARRERA 3.2 SUPER SPORT TARGA

This Porsche 911 Carrera 3.2 Super Sport Targa is an exciting 1980s sports car, presented in impressive condition and with a wonderful factory specification. It is powered by the 228bhp 3.2-litre air-cooled flat-six, coupled to the five-speed Getrag G50 manual transmission. The odometer shows 91,789 miles from new.

An original UK-market car, this 911 was specified from the factory with the M491-code ‘Super Sport Equipment’ package, consisting of the Turbo-look flared body, a black lip spoiler at the front and the ‘whale tail’ spoiler at the rear. It also included the axle brackets and stabilisers from the Turbo, along with the more powerful brakes.

This car benefits from the G50 transmission and hydraulic clutch, as well as thicker anti-roll bars. It was first registered in January 1988, and has evidently been well cared for during its life. The car has very good service history, though there is a gap between 2010 and 2015 when it is understood to have been largely kept in longer-term dry storage. The last private owner acquired the car in May 2015, and around the same time it had a full engine rebuild to ensure it was back in fine fettle. It is now offered by the trade to another enthusiast owner.

The bodywork of this 911 is in genuinely excellent condition, with no dents or scratches in any of the panels. The door jamb panels are in superb order, with no signs of corrosion, and the metallic Marine Blue paint has a smooth and glossy appearance all around the car. There are some light stone chips at front and on the black wing guards at the rear, as well as a small scuff on the nearside wing mirror cover.

Inside, the cabin is upholstered in Linen leather for the front and rear seats, as well as the door cards, and is accented by dark blue piping around the bolsters. There is some very slight wear on the driver’s side bolster, but otherwise the leather presents beautifully. The steering wheel and gear knob are in very good condition, with only some minor wear and discolouration around the wheel rim.

The front seats are electrically adjustable, there are electric windows, the standard heating and ventilation system is fitted, and the stereo has been upgraded to a contemporary aftermarket item. There are no known electrical issues, and the instrument dials work as they should. At the back of the car, there is a heated rear screen and rear wiper.

After spending nearly five years in dry storage, the 911 was treated to a full engine rebuild in 2015 at around 90,700 miles, carried out by HP Porsche in North London. The company is a recognised specialist in its field, and has a dedicated rebuild room that ensures that engine components are kept in excellent condition.

Prior to going into storage, the car was seen for an annual service in December 2009 at 88,300 miles at Porsche Centre Kendal, and had its engine oil renewed in October 2008 at 86,346 miles at marque specialist La Rose Porsche in Sevenoaks. The latter also included replacement of the clutch - and it has covered less than 6,000 miles since then.

Its most recent MOT test was on 16 January 2020 at 91,713 miles, which resulted in a clean pass with no advisories whatsoever. The wheels are shod in a set of Pirelli Cinturato P7 tyres in size 205/55 R16 at the front and 225/50 R16 at the rear. They are all date-coded to 2013, and remain in virtually as-new condition. Accompanying the 911 are original books, including the stamped maintenance record, which provides a comprehensive record of the mileage from new.

This Porsche 911 Carrera 3.2 Super Sport Targa is a wonderful example of one of the iconic ‘poster cars’ of the 1980s. With its factory-fitted spoilers and wide body, it perfectly represents the era of excess, and this particular car is in superb cosmetic condition. It benefits from a recent engine rebuild, with less than 1,500 miles covered since, and is sure to delight its owner whenever and wherever they choose to drive it.
