This 1988 Porsche 911 Carrera 3.2 Club Sport is an exceptionally rare model, which is now considered to be one of the marque’s greatest ever driver’s cars. It is powered by a blueprinted version of the 3.2-litre air-cooled flat-six engine, coupled to a five-speed close-ratio Getrag G50 manual transmission. Presented in wonderful condition and with just 71,294 miles from new, this car also boasts comprehensive history from day one.

The Club Sport’s reworked version of the Carrera 3.2 engine featured hollow inlet valves, a higher rev limit, and a modified air intake. On paper, it was rated at the same 231hp as the standard Carrera 3.2, but owners who have put original cars on dynamometers have typically seen outputs north of 240hp. Other changes included the addition of Bilstein shock absorbers, front and rear Sport Equipment spoilers, a short-shift gear lever, and a limited-slip differential.

Most of the changes for the Club Sport model focused on removing unnecessary weight. The sunroof was deleted, along with the air-conditioning, electric windows, central locking, rear seats, rear wiper, door pocket lids, under-sealing, and sound insulation material. There was no standard radio, no fog lamps, no luggage compartment light, and no passenger sun visor. In total, it is believed around 70kg was stripped from the weight of a standard Carrera 3.2.

These cars were only manufactured between August 1987 and September 1989. Of approximately 340 built, only 53 are recorded as genuine C16-code UK market cars, of which this is one. This Club Sport was ordered by an enthusiast in Devon, and was first registered in June 1988. It was acquired by the current owner around 18 months ago, and prior to this was in an impressive Porsche collection for eight years - even featuring on the cover of Ultimate Porsche magazine in June 2017. Prior to this, it was owned by a BRDC board member.

Its bodywork presents in superb condition, and - aside from a barely noticeable small crease in the passenger door (likely from someone else opening their own door onto it) - has no dents or damage to any panels. This is further supported by an exhaustive 230-point report by Porsche expert Peter Morgan in January 2011 at 67,174 miles. It noted that there was no evidence of prior damage, and that overall.the car presented in “first class” condition. Today, the Grand Prix White finish is still in great shape, with the only notes from the seller being that the bonnet, rear bumper and lower flanks have had some remedial paint to rectify stone chips. When this work was done, the red decals on the bonnet and sides were also replaced.

As can be appreciated in the detailed set of photos below, the body trims are in superb order, and the light lenses are free of chips and cracks. The window and door seals are in sound condition, as are the front and rear spoiler trims. It sits on a set of refurbished 16-inch Fuchs alloy wheels, with the centres finished in India Red.

In the pared-back cabin, there are manually adjustable Sport seats, as well as manual window winders. The seats are trimmed in black leatherette with pinstripe cloth facings, and the upholstery is in excellent condition, with very little wear to speak of. Ahead of the driver, the steering wheel has been upgraded for a dished Momo Prototipo item, but the original steering wheel is safely stored, and comes with the car.

In this particular Club Sport, a Blaupunkt Toronto SQR 46 radio was fitted from the factory. Otherwise, there is a bare minimum of switchgear, and the original VDO dials all present clearly and work perfectly. At the front of the car, the lightweight boot lining is in good order, and the seller has just had the bonnet gas struts replaced as the older ones were starting to fade in strength.

The car has a superb service history, and the last scheduled maintenance was in March 2018 at 70,139 miles, carried out by renowned specialist Autofarm. This was a major 12,000-mile service, which also included brake fluid renewal, refurbishment of all wheels, the aforementioned paintwork, stripping and powder coating on the underbody, as well as Waxoyl treatment. It has covered less than 1,200 miles since this work, and remains in excellent mechanical order.

There are 11 invoices in the history file from Autofarm, covering all work carried out since 2011, totalling more than £13,000. During this period, as well as routine maintenance, various minor items were gradually attended to to ensure it was kept in superb condition.

The car is fresh from an MOT test carried out on 1 May 2020 at 71,265 miles, which resulted in a first-time pass with no advisories whatsoever. The expiry date on the new certificate is 30 April 2021.

The alloy wheels are fitted with Bridgestone S-02 tyres in size 205/55 ZR16 at the front and 225/50 ZR16 at the rear. Though the tyres are date-coded to 2017 and 2018 on the front and rear respectively, they were fitted as a new and unused set in 2019, and all four have around 7mm of tread remaining.

Accompanying the car is the original red wallet, containing the driver’s manual (including the exceptionally rare ‘911 CS Supplement to Owner’s Manual’), service directory, and the stamped guarantee and maintenance record. The latter includes 22 service stamps, while two additional Autofarm visits are evidenced by invoices in the history file. All MOT certificates dating back to 1997 are still with the car, as is the detailed 230-point inspection report from 2011 compiled by Peter Morgan. This Carrera Club Sport was featured in the June 2017 cover story of Ultimate Porsche magazine, as an exemplar of the model - and a copy of the magazine is included with the car. A Porsche Certificate of Authenticity is also present.

This 911 Carrera 3.2 Club Sport is an outstanding example of one of the rarest special-edition Porsches. Save for the easily-swapped steering wheel, it remains original and unmodified, and the remarkable cosmetic and mechanical condition belies its age. Its documentation is also exceptional, with comprehensive service history from new. As one of only 53 UK market cars, this is not only a coveted collector car, but it is also one of the finest driving 911s ever built.
