1988 PORSCHE 911 CARRERA 3.2 CLUB SPORT

This Porsche 911 Carrera 3.2 Club Sport is an exceptionally well-presented example of one of the most sought-after modern classic sports cars, boasting its original body panels and numbers-matching engine. It is powered by a blueprinted 3.2-litre air-cooled flat-six, coupled to a close-ratio five-speed G50 manual transmission. The odometer indicates 84,660 miles.

While on paper, the Club Sport’s 3.2-litre engine was rated at the same 231hp as the standard Carrera, its blueprinted build incorporated hollow inlet valves, a higher rev limiter, and a modified air intake. In truth, original Club Sport engines have been measured north of 240hp. The G50 gearbox incorporated a short-shift gear lever, while the rear wheels were driven through a limited-slip differential. Other upgrades included Bilstein sport shock absorbers, and front and rear Sport Equipment spoilers.

Significant attention was paid to keeping the Club Sport as light as possible. Its body shell had no sunroof, and the air-conditioning, electric windows, central locking, rear seats, rear wiper, and door pocket lids were all removed. Porsche also removed the underseal and sound insulation material. As standard, it came without a radio, and with no fog lamps, no passenger sun visor, and no luggage compartment light. The result of the pared-back specification was a weight saving of around 70kg compared to the standard Carrera 3.2. Of approximately 340 built by the factory, just 53 are recorded as being sold to the UK market (C16 code).

This example is one of those genuine right-hand drive cars, and was first registered in August 1988. It was acquired by the vendor around three-and-a-half years ago, and has been featured in GT Porsche magazine in recent years as an exemplar of this incredible driver's car.

The bodywork of this 911 Club Sport is in superb condition, and the vendor states that it retains its original panels throughout. In 1996, it was treated to a full repaint at main dealer JCT600, which came with a lifetime guarantee against faults in the finish, and was captured with a photographic record of the work. In February 2020, its Grand Prix White paintwork was prepared to concours standards, beginning with a full decontamination, with paint correction and refinement. The car was then given a Ceramic Guard coating, with the wheels removed, cleaned, and also given the Ceramic Guard treatment. The underside and exhaust system was enhanced and sealed, and the engine bay was fully cleaned and dressed. All of the work was carried out by Autogleam in Telford. Today, the car still presents in pristine condition, belying its more than 30 years of age.

Stepping inside, the cabin is in wonderful condition, with the sports seats upholstered with black leatherette backings and pinstriped cloth facings. There is no damage to the seats, which present in remarkably good order, and the rest of the interior trim is also in great shape. Ahead of the driver is a dished Momo steering wheel trimmed in Alcantara, though the original steering wheel is also included in the sale. The only other upgrade is a discreet Porsche Classic head unit, which blends a retro aesthetic with modern features such as satellite navigation and Bluetooth. All of the switchgear works as it should, and there are no electrical faults.

The car is booked to have a fresh service on 22 March at Porsche Centre Wolverhampton during the auction, so the seller will provide the latest mileage and detail on the work in due course. Prior to this, it has been looked after by independent Porsche specialist Paul Stevens over the last three years. In April 2019 at 84,312 miles, it was given an engine oil service, and was also fitted with a new nearside rear inner CV boot, reversing light, and a headlight lens. A broken fire extinguisher clip was repaired, as was the contact for the nearside door light. It was fitted with a new clutch during the March 2018 service at 84,147 miles, which was also carried out at Paul Stevens.

The vehicle passed an MOT test on 16 March 2021 at 84,660 miles with no advisories, which means the car can be driven and enjoyed straight away. All four wheels have just been fitted with brand-new Pirelli tyres.

Accompanying this car are two very large history files, packed with a raft of paperwork, including numerous service receipts, old MOT certificates and tax discs. The original book pack is also present, and the car comes with a Porsche immobiliser and fitted with a Tracker.

This Porsche 911 Carrera 3.2 Club Sport is a very well-maintained and beautifully presented example of a model that has fast become one of the most coveted sports cars to have come out of Stuttgart. The ‘arms race’ for increasingly huge power outputs and millisecond-shift automatic transmissions has left many enthusiasts craving a purist, analogue driving experience. In this regard, the exceptionally rare Carrera 3.2 Club Sport is now a connoisseur’s classic, and a must-have addition to any serious Porsche collection.
