1988 PEUGEOT 205 GTI 1.9 - NON SUNROOF / NON-PAS

This lovingly maintained Peugeot 205 GTI is in remarkably well-preserved condition and has evidently been enjoyed and cared-for throughout its lifetime. Power comes from a 1.9-litre petrol engine, producing around 128bhp in stock form, which is teamed with a five-speed manual gearbox. The odometer shows 60,462 miles.

This 205 GTI was first registered in December 1988. A handwritten notebook with the car shows that the first owner has previously had another 205 GTI between July 1988 and November 1988, but it was damaged and traded in for this white car. There are eight previous registered keepers on the log book, and it has been in the hands of its current owner for around eight months.

At first glance, it’s clear that this car is in very good order, with no major blemishes in sight. Closer inspection reveals some stone ‘rash’ on the lower front valance, three small touched-up stone chips on the front edge of the bonnet and some small chips to the edge of the driver’s door. There are also some thin areas of paint on the edges of the front lower valance, and some chips in the paint inside the wheel arches, but overall this GTI presents superbly for a 22-year-old car. The ‘pepper pot’ alloy wheels are in great condition, with no scrapes or kerb damage.

Inside, the car is equally well presented, with only minor imperfections in the cabin. The red-and-grey colour scheme is original, as are the part-leather seats. There are some small spots of wear on the seat bolsters and the driver’s seat has a loose thread, but otherwise it looks clean and tidy throughout. The fixtures and fittings are correct, and there is even a period-perfect Philips radio/cassette player. Everything works as it should, with no faults noted by the seller.

Accompanied by an exceptional service history record, this 205 GTI was serviced annually – and sometimes more often – over the first 14 years of its life. Not only that, but a detailed handwritten fuel log remains with the car, presenting a fastidious record of the mileage between the late 1980s and 2004. The most recent service was carried out by Bristol Mercedes specialist garage D&B Automotive in June 2020, when the car had covered 60,303 miles. The service included the usual oil and fuel filter changes, as well as fitting a new fan switch.

This followed services in January 2017, when the car had 59,507 miles on the clock, and in August 2013, when the odometer showed 58,916 miles. The former included an oil and filter change, while the latter was a £5,258 overhaul that included new brake discs and callipers, new bulbs, struts and brake pipes, and a new cambelt. The suspension was given a Waxoyl treatment, and a new vacuum pipe was fitted, as well as a new exhaust system.

The most recent MOT test was on 5 June 2019 at 59,925 miles, which resulted in a pass with just one advisory, which was a non-excessive oil leak on the sump. The car is currently wearing Pirelli front and Nankang rear tyres, all of which are in good condition with plenty of tread remaining.

A vast amount of paperwork is included in this car, including a service book with 25 stamps and a full main dealer service history for the first 18 years. Receipts for all services are included, along with the original bill of sale, several tax discs and numerous old MOT certificates that pre-date the online system.

Presented in excellent condition and accompanied by extensive history, this Peugeot 205 GTI is clearly a cherished example. These cars are becoming ever more collectable, and an unmolested, well-loved vehicle without power steering or a sunroof is perhaps the purist’s choice. The car is reported to be in excellent working order, allowing the next owner to get out and enjoy the handling and performance that made the GTI such a desirable vehicle in the first place.
