1988 PEUGEOT 205 GTI 1.9

This 1988 Peugeot 205 GTI is a well-maintained example of the charming modern classic hot hatch, presented in highly original condition and in good order throughout. Under the bonnet sits the 126bhp 1.9-litre inline-four, coupled to a five-speed manual transmission. The odometer currently indicates 79,327 miles from new.

First registered in April 1988, this characterful hatchback has been in the hands of its current keeper for nearly eight years. It is a non-sunroof car, and there is no power steering fluid reservoir in the engine bay, making it arguably the purist’s choice when seeking an original 205 GTI.

The car’s bodywork is all in excellent shape, and it has been resprayed in its original shade of red. The condition of the finish has been described as good, though the vendor has reported a couple of minor stone chips on the front end and a small crack in the rear plastic trim. However, the rest of the body has retained an impressive shine. The vehicle rides on a set of 15-inch Speedline alloys, which have just a couple of small blemishes and some slight discolouration to the wheel nuts.

Inside, the seats are trimmed with the original black leather bolsters and fabric centre panels. There is some creasing and surface scratches to the leather, as well as heavier wear on the front seat outer bolsters, including small patches where it has worn through on the driver’s side. However, the seats are eminently usable, and could easily be improved or re-trimmed in the future if desired. The door cards present well for their age, while the dashboard appears to be in very good order, with some superficial scuffs and marks. An aftermarket Sony stereo has been installed, and no electrical faults have been detected.

The last routine maintenance was undertaken in February 2021 at 79,400 miles, where technicians at SK Automotive Engineers on the Isle of Wight carried out a full service, before replacing the timing belt, water pump, exhaust manifold gaskets, rear exhaust silencer, brake pipes, brake hoses, both front outer CV boots and the valve cover gasket. Some breather pipes and wiring were re-positioned, and some interior components were repaired. Prior to this, Performance Services in Gloucester serviced the car in May 2017 at 78,796 miles.

The most recent MOT test was on 28 November 2020 at 79,045 miles, which resulted in a clean pass with no advisories orders or defects. The tyres are reported to be in good condition, with around 6mm of tread remaining.

Accompanying the vehicle are the original owner’s manuals in their factory wallet, the stamped service book, along with partial service history paperwork, and the relevant Haynes Service and Repair Manual.

This Peugeot 205 GTI 1.9 is a smart example of the beloved hot hatch, which has recently undergone an extensive cambelt service and is presented in strong mechanical condition. While the next owner could choose to refurbish the interior, many would choose to leave it original. A characterful daily driver or a fun weekend toy, this 205 GTI would make a solid choice for any keen driver or collector.
