1988 MERCEDES-BENZ (R107) 500 SL

This Mercedes Benz 500SL represents one of the classiest models to emerge from the Sindelfingen factory; the R107 SL model oozing style and panache. This late model right-hand-drive 500SL with below average mileage and every-box-ticked specification is graced with a desirable combination of Pearl Grey Metallic coachwork and a grey leather interior. With its 5.0-litre V8 engine and automatic transmission, this SL offers the prospective new owner the opportunity to enjoy relaxed and sophisticated motoring.

This UK-market SL was first registered on the 1 August 1988. F969 OUU has seen miles added gently over the years with the odometer now showing 90,436 miles and just 11,700 miles being evenly added over the past decade. The current owner acquired the car last year, and has subsequently spent some £7,000 to bring it back to daily usable condition. It is only now being offered for sale due to a change in personal circumstances.

Boasting what is believed to be original paintwork, this SL still presents very well with straight panel work and a deep lustre to its metallic paintwork. Detailed inspection shows a clean front end with minimal stone chips, and a small scuff above one of the wheel arches. Chrome, lights and trim remain in good order, as do the alloy wheels that show minor signs of lifting paint. It is offered with both the desirable colour-coded factory hardtop and fabric folding roof.

Trimmed in grey leather and wood veneers, the SL’s cabin presents superbly for its age and mileage, thanks to very recent refurbishment. The driver’s seat bolster panel has been replaced and colour-matched, and in general the upholstery is in wonderful condition. There is a small split in the transmission tunnel cover, but all of the wood inlays have just been re-veneered and now look wonderful. The current owner has also replaced the sun visors. 

The vendor states that every option available was specified from the factory, including electric windows, heated seats, cruise control, leather upholstery, rear seats, outside temperature gauge, and even a driver’s airbag. The factory-fitted radio has been upgraded to a more modern Sony CD unit. All controls and electrical equipment are reported to be in good working order with no known faults. At the back of the car, the boot is lined with black carpet that is clean and in good order. There is stowage for an original full-sized spare wheel, jack and original toolkit.

Since acquiring the car, the vendor has fitted all new shock absorbers and springs, and has also had four new Michelin Cross Climate tyres fitted. Prior to this, it was serviced at 85,500 miles by a Mercedes Benz specialist in 2018, which comprised a standard oil and filter change. Other service history is documented within the original stamped booklet included with the car, plus an extensive file of paperwork.

The most recent MOT was on 1 March 2021 at 90,432 miles, which resulted in a first-time pass with no advisories or defects noted. Advisory items from the late 2019 MOT test have been rectified since then. The car comes with a history file that is around one inch thick, and packed with more than 20 old MOT certificates and a raft of maintenance documentation. It even retains the original purchase invoice from Mercedes main dealer Normand Mayfair, with a total new price of £46,127.43.
