1988 MERCEDES-BENZ (R107) 500 SL

This Mercedes Benz 500SL represents one of the classiest Mercedes Benz models to emerge from the Sindelfingen factory; the R107 SL model oozing style and panache. This late model right-hand-drive 500SL with below average mileage and a high specification is graced with a desirable combination of Pearl Grey Metallic coachwork and a grey leather interior. With its 5.0-litre V8 engine and automatic transmission, this SL offers the prospective new owner the opportunity to enjoy relaxed and sophisticated motoring.

This UK-market SL was first registered on the 1 August 1988.  F969 OUU has seen miles added gently over the years with the odometer now showing 90,390 miles and just 11,682 miles being evenly added over the past decade. There are nine previous keepers on the log book, and it has been in the current ownership for the last five years.

Boasting what is believed to be original paintwork, this SL still presents very well with straight panel work and a deep lustre to its metallic paintwork. Detailed inspection shows a clean front end with minimal stone chips, and a small scuff above one of the wheel arches. Chrome, lights and trim remain in good order, as do the alloy wheels that show minor signs of lifting paint. It is offered with both the desirable colour-coded factory hardtop and fabric folding roof.

Trimmed in grey leather and wood veneers, the SL’s cabin presents well and honestly for its age and mileage. The driver’s seat outer bolster has some evident wear, but in general the upholstery is in good order. Some wear and tear is visible around the cabin trims, including to the door cards, a small split in the transmission tunnel cover, and some deterioration of the wood finishes.

A high level of optional extras includes electric windows, heated seats and cruise control. The factory-fitted radio has been upgraded to a more modern Sony CD unit. All controls and electrical equipment are reported to be in good working order with no known faults. The vendor points out that the driver’s side sun visor clip is broken and will need replacing. At the back of the car, the boot is lined with black carpet that is clean and in good order. There is stowage for an original full-sized spare wheel, jack and original toolkit.

Last serviced at 85,500 miles by a Mercedes Benz specialist in 2018, this included a standard oil and filter change. The vendor states that the service history is documented within the stamped booklet included with the car. Currently under a valid SORN certificate, the vendor reports the SL is nonetheless ready to drive.

The most recent MOT was on 8 November 2019 at 89,993 miles, which required some offside front brake seizing to be rectified. The online record also shows an oil leak on the steering box, and a number of advisories, including corrosion on the coil springs, shock absorbers, and rear brake hoses ferrules, as well as a minor oil leak. The offside front tyre was also noted to be worn on the outer edge, and the nearside rear brake pad low. These advisories will be relatively straightforward for the next owner to attend to in due course, and the vendor states that overall it has been mechanically sound while in his care.
