1988 FORD RS200 - 5,510 MILES

  • KEY FACTS
  • A thrilling, roadgoing version of the iconic Group B rally monster, benefitting from frequent maintenance and modified to produce in excess of 400bhp.
  • Under the rear clamshell is the Cosworth-developed turbocharged four-cylinder engine, which has been enlarged from its original 1803cc to 1950cc, and drives all four wheels via a slick five-speed transmission.
  • First registered in September 1988, the car was delivered new to Ford dealer Dees of Croydon.
  • It was acquired by the seller four years ago, and has been driven sparingly and kept in dry storage when not in use. There are just three previous keepers on the logbook.

EQUIPMENT AND FEATURES

  • As with all RS200s, this example was assembled with a body finished in white gel coat, and features a grey carpeted interior with heavily bolstered red bucket seats.
  • In October 1989, the car went back to Tickford to be upgraded to 350bhp specification - a substantial increase from the standard road car’s 246bhp.
  • It rides on the correct set of Ford Motorsport 16-inch alloy wheels, which feature some minor scuffs and scratches, but are in good shape overall.
  • Throughout the car’s life it has been maintained to a very high standard, with the engine being rebuilt in 2006, before the vehicle was fully recommissioned and tuned by motorsport specialist Geoff Page Racing in 2010.
  • The car will be accompanied by two RS200-branded folders of paperwork as well as an A4 box file of maintenance invoices, MOT test certificates and other documents. The seller is also supplying the vehicle’s original tool box. While the pliers are currently missing, these will be sent on to the buyer if they are located.

CONDITION

  • There is no known bodywork damage, and all of the car’s original panels are still in place.
  • While it is not known whether the white paintwork has had any remedial work in the past, it presents well overall. There are small stone chips around the car and slight cracks on the fibreglass nose panel, but this hardly detracts from this car’s rally-inspired charm.
  • There is a crack on the passenger-side of the windscreen, which may need to be replaced in due course.
  • Inside, the cabin presents very well, with one small blemish on the passenger seat and some minor blemishes on the plastic trim, while the door pockets are also delaminating slightly.
  • While the handbrake warning light occasionally flickers, there are no other known electrical or mechanical issues with the vehicle.
  • The car’s last MOT test was conducted on 14 September 2020 at 5,422 miles, resulting in a first-time pass without a single warning or advisory.

SERVICE HISTORY

  • This RS200’s most recent maintenance was carried out in September 2020 at 5,344 miles by a qualified engineer and mechanic. This included replacement of the timing belt, along with the front brake discs and all of the brake pads, as well as an engine oil and filter change.
  • Prior to this, the car was maintained by RS200 specialist Simon Rudge; however there is no documentation of this.
  • In 2010, the car was fully rebuilt, tuned and modified by motorsport specialist Geoff Page Racing. This included replacement of the turbocharger, ECU and wastegate with uprated parts, polishing of the inlet manifold and the fitment of high-performance camshafts, increasing the engine’s output to more than 400bhp.
  • Furthermore, the shock absorbers were overhauled, the anti-roll bar bushes were replaced and a full suspension setup was carried out, ensuring the car has suitably sharp handling to match its impressive performance.

SUMMARY

This Ford RS200 is a fantastic example of the legendary Group B homologation special. Tuned by a motorsport specialist to produce more than 400bhp and wearing blue livery over white bodywork, this RS200 is every bit the rally-bred icon. What’s more, the car remains fully road legal, making this perhaps the ideal weekend plaything for any ‘fast Ford’ enthusiast, retro rally fan or shrewd collector.
