1988 DUCATI 851 STRADA 'TRICOLORE'

This Ducati 851 Strada ‘Tricolore’ is a rare road-going superbike, and represents the collectible genesis point of the four-valve ‘Desmo’ head Ducatis. It is powered by a 105hp fuel-injected 851cc L-twin Desmodromic engine, coupled to a six-speed transmission. The odometer shows 28,701 km.

One of just 304 ‘Strada’ versions of the 851 built in 1988, this superbike was imported to the UK and re-registered in April 2018, and was acquired by The Brunt Collection in May that year.

The Ducati presents in wonderful condition for its age, resplendent in the original ‘Tricolore’ livery that made it virtually an instant collector favourite in period. The paint finish is in great shape, with few if any blemishes around the tanks and fairings. Its frame, forks, exhausts, and engine ancillaries have some very small marks and chips in places, but this is a very well-presented example overall.

On top of the fuel tank is a graphic of Marco Lucchinelli’s signature - a nod to the fact that the 851 prototype took him to debut victory in the 1987 Daytona Battle of the Twins in Florida.

While its early service history is not known, the bike has received annual oil changes and routine maintenance while part of The Brunt Collection, and it is reported to be in very good running order.

The most recent MOT test was on 27 March 2021 at 28,701 km, which resulted in a first-time pass with no advisories. Both the front and rear wheels are fitted with Continental ContiMotion tyres.

This Ducati 851 Strada ‘Tricolore’ is a well-presented example of the marque’s very first Desmodromic superbike, and one which was derived from a race-winning sports prototype. As one of just 304 examples built in 1988, it is also a very rare road-legal machine, and as such is sure to appeal to both seasoned Ducati collectors and modern classic enthusiasts alike.
