1988 ALFA ROMEO 75 3.0 V6

This 1988 Alfa Romeo 75 is a restored example of the charming Italian sports saloon, presented with low mileage and now in excellent condition. Under the bonnet sits the original 3.0-litre V6 Busso engine producing around 186bhp, coupled with a five-speed manual transmission and limited slip differential. The odometer currently indicates 57,741 miles from new.

First registered in September 1988, this Alfa 75 is now offered for sale by a member of the motor trade with five previous registered keepers on the logbook. Though to be one of around 100 examples left in the UK, with far fewer in roadworthy condition, this Alfa comes with an amber rear light strip, headlight washers, and the correct sill, wheel arch and bumper extensions. The UK car spent the last ten years of its life in the south of France with it's previous owner and was brought back to the UK in 2020, when it was purchased by Fostering Classics, where over 1,000 hours have been spent on comprehensive restoration work.

The condition of the black paintwork has been described as excellent, with the vendor noting the vehicle has enjoyed a comprehensive respray and now presents with just a few light marks on the grey body trims. The vehicle rides on a set of restored 16-inch Speedline alloy wheels, which are in excellent condition all round.

While no records of any damage are present in the history file, a HPI check shows that in 1997, this Alfa Romeo 75 was recorded as a Category C vehicle. However, in March 2021 it was sent to Autolign Northampton, where it has been Condition Inspected to ensure that any previous repairs were to an appropriately high standard. The car has subsequently been removed from the Condition Alert Register.

Inside, the car features a grey cloth interior, alongside the rare optional electric sunroof, rear reading lamps and rear electric windows. An original type Blaupunkt stereo is fitted, which has been upgraded with Bluetooth and handsfree option to allow Spotify to be streamed or handsfree phone calls to be made, along with the electric passenger mirror, front fog lamps and central locking.

The vendor notes the seats have been replaced with like-for-like replacements from a very low-mileage donor car, now presenting in excellent condition. The door cards, floor mats and headlining are in good shape, and the cabin also features a set of tailored floor mats. The vendor notes the boot carpet has a few stains, and that the rear central locking actuators are stiff and do not always function. The windscreen wipers occasionally fail to ‘park’ correctly, but there are no other electrical foibles noted.

The Alfa Romeo was restored by Fostering Classics in South Littleton, where technicians have spent over 1,000 hours attending to the vehicle. It now features a combination of new and fabricated wheel arches, a full wax underseal, resprayed black paintwork and a renewed bonnet and sunroof. Outside, a rare set of standard draught excluders have been sourced and fitted, along with genuine pedal rubbers and the headlining has been re-adhered.

Under the bonnet, the engine bearing shells have been replaced along with the timing belt tensioner and pulley, water pump, exhaust cam followers, belts, cooling fan, engine mounts, gaskets and seals. A new three-piece clutch was fitted along with replacement lines and master and slave cylinders, while the transmission has been rebuilt due to a weak second-gear synchromesh. A new propshaft was sourced from a donor car, and all three ‘doughnut’ couplings have been changed along with the centre bearing and mount. The fuel tank sender has also been replaced, along with the fuel pump, filter and all fuel lines. Underneath, the car features a new exhaust system, alongside renewed brakes, bushes, dampers, ball joints, track rod ends, front wheel bearings and steering bellows.

The most recent MOT test was on 27 January 2021 at 57,515 miles, which resulted in a pass with one advisory to monitor slight play in both rear wheel bearings. The wheels come wrapped with a brand new set of Toyo Proxes tyres.

Accompanying the vehicle are the original the owner’s handbook and folder, as well as the Alfa Romeo Certificate of Authenticity, providing evidence of the car’s matching numbers, paintwork and specification.

This Alfa Romeo 75 3.0 V6 is a lovingly restored example of the breed, and is a remarkably rare sight on UK roads. A highly usable classic, this Alfa Romeo would prove to be an enjoyable companion for road trips, and would make a great addition to any assembly of modern classics.
