1987 PORSCHE 928 S4

This Porsche 928 S4 is a superb example of a late 1980s classic, presented in a rare and stunning colour combination, and with just one previous owner. It is powered by the 320hp 5.0-litre M28/41 V8 engine, coupled to the five-speed manual transmission. The odometer shows just 51,493 miles from new.

Introduced for the 1987 model year, the S4 was a significant step up from the S2, with the V8’s displacement up from 4.7 to 5.0 litres, and a 32-valve DOHC cylinder head design. The S4 could sprint from 0-60mph in around six seconds, and on to a top speed of 168mph. Braking was by uprated Brembo front discs and four-piston calipers, while the clever multi-link 'Weissach' rear axle kept handling in check.

This particular UK market car was first registered in September 1987, and for the next 30 years it would remain with the same private owner, who cherished the 928 and kept it in superb condition. The striking colour scheme was a very considered choice - and he ordered four new Porsche models in the same paint hue (928, 964, 911 Carrera 3.2 and 3.3-litre Turbo). The current owner acquired it three years ago, and has enjoyed some 2,000 miles behind the wheel.

The bodywork is in superb condition, with no evidence of panel damage or corrosion. Its Moss Green metallic paint is in good order, showing only very minor blemishes and light stone chips at the front and on the wings. The door jambs, bonnet and tailgate shuts are all in great shape.

All of the light lenses present very well, and the window seals and door rubbers are sound. The satin black front lip spoiler and rear wing are also in good condition. It sits on the original set of 16-inch forged alloy wheels, which have only a few imperfections around the rims.

In the cabin, the sumptuous tan Mahogany leather looks absolutely wonderful. There is some visible wear on the driver's seat side bolster, but no rips or tears in the material. The interior is equipped with electrically adjustable seats, automatic air-conditioning, electric windows, and a power operated sunroof - and all of the switchgear works as it should.

It remains in highly original condition, and even the factory-fit Blaupunkt Toronto SQR 46 stereo is still present. At the back of the car, the boot lining is in very good order, while there are just a few marks underneath the fabric tonneau cover. Under the floor is a space-saver spare wheel and jack.

Over the last three years, this 928 S4 has received maintenance as required by well-known specialist Tuthill Porsche. A March 2018 invoice details a major service with a total spend of £6,500, including replacement of the cam belt, air pump belt, power steering belt, air-conditioning belt, and alternator. All four Bilstein shock absorbers were also renewed, new intake manifold gaskets were fitted, and a fresh set of ignition leads was installed. The car also received four new tyres.

The most recent MOT test was on 6 November 2018 at 51,123 miles, which resulted in a first-time pass with no advisories. Its online MOT history record documents the last 14 years of use, covering some 10,000 miles, and reflects its impressive condition.

It has been covered by a valid SORN certificate since 2019 and will be given a fresh 12-month MOT before handing over to the next owner. The wheels are fitted with Continental SportContact tyres in size 225/50 ZR16 at the front and 245/45 ZR16 at the rear. They are date-coded to 2017 and are in excellent condition.

Writing about the S4 at its launch in the July 1987 issue of Motor Sport magazine, journalist Gordon Cruickshank called the grand tourer “breathtakingly fast, but placid and smooth [...] A glorious piece of engineering”. He concluded: “It is a fine compromise in function with no compromise in execution — a hatchback with luggage space which will quarter Europe in a day and provide immense satisfaction while running rings around many another sports aspirant".

This 1987 Porsche 928 S4 is a wonderful modern classic, which remains original and unmodified. It is presented in a stunning factory colour combination, and for the first 30 years of its life resided with just one fastidious private owner. The fact that this V8 is equipped with the five-speed manual gearbox only increases its desirability, and it would make a fine addition to any collection.
