1987 PORSCHE 911 CARRERA 3.2 SPORT - G50 GEARBOX

This Porsche 911 Carrera 3.2 with Sport Equipment is a very smart example of a desirable modern classic, presented in strong mechanical condition and in a period-perfect colour scheme. Its engine is the 228bhp 3.2-litre air-cooled flat-six engine, coupled to the desirable five-speed Getrag G50 manual transmission. The odometer shows 152,842 miles from new, which is fully evidenced by the comprehensive history file.

A genuine right-hand drive C16-code car, this 911 was specified from the factory with the UK dealer ‘Sport Equipment’ package, comprising upgraded Bilstein shock absorbers, lightweight forged alloys, a black lip spoiler at the front and the ‘whale tail’ spoiler at the rear. It was also fitted with a sunroof, Sport seats, and velour carpeting in the luggage compartment. The car was delivered new via Maltin Car Concessionaires in Henley-on-Thames in October 1987.

The rear spoiler and lip spoiler have been removed in the car’s past, quite possibly at the same time that the current suspension setup was installed, which is lower than the Bilstein items. Its impressive overall condition led to it representing the 1980s era of the 911 during the Porsche 70th anniversary celebrations in the UK. The seller has owned the car for the last five years, and has covered around 7,000 miles behind the wheel.

The bodywork of this 911 presents very well, with good shut lines and smooth panels. The seller notes that there are a few small patches of paint bubbling that could be attended to in the future, notably in the nearside door jamb, and on the other side of the car near the offside door. However, as the extensive set of photos shows, the car still looks superb, with an even finish throughout the Grand Prix White paint.

All of the light lenses, plastic body trims, and the rear reflector, are all in great shape. The window rubbers are also sound, with no perishing or damage. The car sits on a set of 16-inch Fuchs alloys with a staggered setup, finished with polished metal rims and satin black centres. There are a few spots of flaked paint on the wheels, but no kerbing marks whatsoever.

In the cabin, the Grey Green leather is original and there is now an appealing patina on all of the upholstery. There is some cracking in the piping, surface wear, and slight discolouration to the driver’s seat side bolsters in particular, but in general the interior looks very smart. The grey carpeting complements the dark green hide and is in good order throughout, as are all of the plastic trims and switchgear.

There is a heated rear window with wiper, electric adjustment for both front seats, and the factory-fitted sunroof works as it should. Having originally been fitted with a Blaupunkt stereo, this has been upgraded to a contemporary Kenwood head unit with CD player, USB socket and Bluetooth connectivity.

The last scheduled maintenance was carried out by specialist engineers Webster and Lancaster in March 2019 at 150,812 miles. This consisted of renewal of the engine oil and filter, replacement of the rear brake discs and pads, refurbishment of the rear calipers, and a new breather pipe to the carbon canister.

In February 2018, it was seen and serviced by Porsche specialist RPM Technik, with renewal of the engine and gearbox oils, rocker cover gaskets, new fuel filter, fresh set of spark plugs, and replacement flange gaskets for the heat exchanger to rectify an exhaust blow. A minor service was also carried out by RPM in 2017, along with renewal of the circuit board for the heating controls.

The car was looked after exclusively by RPM Technik in the period from 2011 to 2018, and other work carried out during this time included new front track rod ends, fan belt, and a geometry setup in 2015, plus a top-end engine rebuild in 2011 at 136,798 miles.

The most recent MOT test was on 16 October 2019 at 152,686 miles, which resulted in a clean pass with no advisories whatsoever. In fact, each of the last six MOT tests has had the same result, with no warnings or alerts - which reflects the care and attention paid by the current owner to keep it in superb condition. The alloy wheels are shod in a set of Toyo Proxes tyres, in size 205/55 ZR16 at the front and 245/45 ZR16 at the rear, which were fitted as new items in early 2019.

The car is accompanied by the original dark red book wallet, housing the driver’s manual, service directory, and the stamped guarantee and maintenance record. It also comes with an extensive history file, comprising old MOT certificates, tax discs, insurance documents, and lots of invoices and receipts for work completed.

This Porsche 911 Carrera 3.2 Sport is a superb example of an exciting 1980s performance car, which boasts an outstanding record of maintenance from new. It has always been in regular use throughout its life, and has the reliability record to make a great daily driver classic should the next owner desire. Of course, the impressive condition means it would also make a fine addition to any collection as a less frequently driven car.

The car is offered from the Horizon Classics collection, which has been assembled by a passionate enthusiast who has always bought cars that he will drive and enjoy. They are all kept in superb mechanical order, ready to take out at a moment’s notice, and represent some of the most popular modern classics.
