1987 PEUGEOT 205 GTI 1.6

This 1987 Peugeot 205 GTI is a superb example of the renowned hot hatch, presented in excellent condition with a fresh coat of Cherry Red paint. Its rev-happy 1.6-litre inline-four engine produces up to 115bhp, sending power to the front wheels via a five-speed manual transmission. The odometer currently indicates 116,112 miles from new.

First registered in August 1987, this 205 GTI has just three previous keepers on the log book. The most recent private owner acquired the car in January 2020. It has been enjoyed as intended throughout its life, but has evidently been kept in good order.

This 205 GTI appears with flush shut lines and smooth panels, with no sign of any prior accidents. The vehicle has undergone a full respray in Cherry Red and now looks superb, as the photos in the gallery show. An aftermarket sunroof was fitted in the early 1990s, which the driver reports fits well and is still fully functional. The car’s headlight and taillight lenses present well, while all of the exterior plastic trims are also in good condition, showing only one or two light marks. This 205 rides on 14-inch wheels, which present with the odd minor blemish, but which are in generally excellent condition.

Moving inside, the seats are trimmed in black and red chequered fabric, which is believed to be original throughout, showing a slightly faded finish but with no rips or tears. The steering wheel and gear knob also exhibit some wear, but this lends the car a well-preserved appearance in the cabin. The vendor reports that all of the switchgear works as it should, with no electrical issues detected, and no warning lights on the dashboard.

The last service was undertaken in February 2020 at 115,282 miles, when the car received an engine oil and filter change, coolant change, a new cam belt and water pump, and a new auxiliary belt. Prior to this, it also received an annual service in July 2019. During the trade vendor’s brief ownership, the front tyres have been rebalanced and the paintwork has received a full machine polish. The engine is reported to be running well, thanks in large part to a static tuning session carried out at Sanspeed in Bexleyheath in 2018.

The most recent MOT test was on 24 June 2020 at 115,419 miles, which resulted in a clean pass with no advisories. The tyres are in good condition, with around 6-7mm of tread remaining.

Accompanying the vehicle are the original owner’s manual, along with a sales brochure and model booklets. Also present is a partial history of previous MOT certificates and lots of receipts for maintenance work.

The Peugeot 205 GTI 1.6 is undoubtedly one of the greatest hot hatches ever built, and this example is looking very smart thanks to its recent respray. Elsewhere, it has been well-preserved cosmetically, and kept in excellent mechanical condition. An ideal no-frills toy for B-road jaunts, this 205 GTI would also make an impressive addition to any collection of modern classics.
