1987 PEUGEOT 205 GTI 1.9

This 1987 Peugeot 205 GTI is a smart example of arguably the definitive 1980s hot hatch, benefiting from a respray in 2013 and a strong maintenance history. Under the bonnet lies a 1.9-litre naturally aspirated inline-four producing around 128bhp, driving the front wheels via a five-speed manual gearbox. The odometer reads 139,869 miles.

First registered on 7 August 1987, this 205 GTI is an original UK-market car. The current vendor has owned this fast Peugeot for the last three-and-a-half years.

Finished in gloss white, the 205 demonstrates a bright shine thanks to a respray undertaken by a previous owner in 2013. There are no significant scratches or dents in the Pininfarina-designed bodywork, though the vendor does note a small amount of bubbling apparent on the bottom edge of the passenger-side rear quarter panel. It is equipped with the optional manual sunroof, which is in full working order. The handsome Speedline alloy wheels are virtually unmarked, with no kerbing damage or scuffs, and only minor bubbling near the centre caps.

Moving inside, the cabin retains many of its original features, including the red carpets which remain in good condition. The seats are believed to retain their original fabric panels and leather bolsters, with minor cigarette burn marks visible on the driver’s seat and one of the rear seats. The original switchgear shows no cracking or damage. Everything is in working order save for the central locking motor on the passenger door, which the vendor says has recently stopped working following a period in storage.

The vendor adds that a spare steering wheel will also be included in the sale, and that the parcel shelf resting lugs are missing. The electric spade connectors have also worked themselves loose from the heated rear window.

The most recent service was carried out by the previous owner at 139,864 miles. The cam belt is on record as having previously been changed in 2013, when the cosmetic refurbishment was also carried out. During the vendor’s ownership, the car has been in dehumidified storage as part of a wider collection of modern classics.

The most recent MOT test was on 21 July 2020. This was a first-time pass with zero advisories, with the previous test recorded on 17 June 2015, with the same clean result. This Gallic hot hatch rides on a fresh set of Pirelli P1 Cinturato tyres.

This Peugeot 205 GTI 1.9 is a fine example of the flyweight hot hatch, presented in good condition and in its original specification. While this car has evidently been driven as intended, it has also been well-maintained, and is a great example of the GTI that begs to be regularly enjoyed on the road.
