1987 MASERATI BI-TURBO SPYDER BY ZAGATO

This 1987 Maserati Biturbo Spyder is a low-mileage example of the rare modern classic cruiser, designed by Italian coachbuilding company Zagato, and is presented in good mechanical order. It is equipped with a twin-turbocharged 2.5-litre fuel-injected V6 producing around 197bhp, coupled with a five-speed manual transmission. The odometer currently indicates 28,718 miles.

An original UK car first registered in September 1987, this Biturbo Spyder has been with its current keeper for nearly two and a half years. Only 122 Spyders of this generation were reportedly produced with the 2.5-litre engine, making it a genuinely rare and collectible vehicle.

After the initial purchase, the car's first owner went to Autohaus in Finchley to fit a front spoiler, skirts and rear apron, along with electric wing mirrors. The bodywork now presents with flush shut lines, smooth panels, and to the best of the vendor’s knowledge, has never sustained any significant damage. The Maserati Rosso paintwork has been described by the vendor as being in good condition, though with some small scratches and stone chips visible around the front end.

The soft top roof presents in good condition – the white marks visible in some of the photos are merely fibres from the car cover. The vehicle rides on a set of 14-inch alloy wheels, which are in excellent condition, commensurate with the low indicated mileage.

Moving inside, the seats are trimmed in tasteful beige leather, which like the exterior paintwork is believed to be original. Some age-related discolouration and creasing can be seen on the seat bottoms and bolsters, which would perhaps benefit from some re-connolising. Similar discolouration is visible in the door card and dashboard-top fabrics, though the surrounding wood veneers appear in good order. The vendor has reported no faults with any of the car’s electrics, and there are no warning lights present on the dashboard.

The last routine maintenance was undertaken in December 2018 at 28,254 miles, where technicians at Hawkins & Shepherd in Derby changed the engine oil, filter, spark plugs and brake fluid, before fitting a new boost pressure sensor. Prior to this, in November 2018, a new clutch master cylinder and slave cylinder were fitted; while in April 2015, the car received a new bearing in the drive belt idle pulley and water pump. The cambelt itself was last changed in 2013 at Autoshield Maserati at 28,111 miles.

The most recent MOT test was on 5 February 2021 at 28,717 miles, which resulted in a clean pass with no advisories or defects. The wheels come wrapped with a set of Continental tyres, which appear to be in good shape all around the car.

Accompanying the vehicle is a large service history, and the vendor reports that it is a very well-documented vehicle, even retaining the original sales invoice. The car also retains its original dashboard clock, Maserati script radio cover plate, leather owner’s wallet, and all booklets.

This Maserati Biturbo Spyder is a low-mileage example of the rare Italian classic, presented in original condition with a handsome patina, and with a very recent advisory-free MOT test under its belt. Well suited to being a sporting cruiser on road trip tours or sunny weekends, this convertible Maserati would make an interesting addition to any collection.
