1987 HONDA VFR750R RC30

This Honda VFR750R ‘RC30’ is an iconic road racer, presented in superb order, and with relatively low mileage. It is powered by the 112hp 748cc liquid-cooled V4, fed by four Keihin carburettors, and coupled to a six-speed transmission. The odometer indicates 13,089 km.

Lightweight, quick, and beautifully balanced, the RC30 is a homologation special that was built first and foremost with racing in mind - and it quickly established superiority among its peers. At the end of the 1980s, Honda’s RC30 dominated the racing at the Isle of Man TT, and in 1989 Steve Hislop set the first sub-20 minute, 120mph-plus lap. In 1993, the model also set the fastest Nürburgring Nordschleife lap time for a motorcycle at 7:49:710.

Built in 1987, the model’s first year of production that was sold exclusively in the Japanese market, this bike was imported to the UK and re-registered with the DVLA in September 2007. It has had two previous keepers since arriving on UK shores, and the bike was acquired by The Brunt Collection in September 2017.

It presents in superb condition today, with no signs of any damage to the frame or bodywork, and with the white, red, and blue livery looking rich and glossy throughout. All of the fixtures and fittings are in very good order, as are the exposed metal components and the light lenses. There are some minor marks on the recognisable white wheels, but overall this RC30 is in impressive cosmetic order.

Well maintained during three-and-a-half years in the current private collection, it has received routine maintenance and annual oil changes to keep it in good order running.

The most recent MOT test took place on 9 April 2021 at 13,089 km, when it achieved a first-time pass with no advisories. The front and rear wheels are both fitted with Dunlop tyres, which have ample tread, but would benefit from replacement on the basis of age.

This Honda VFR750R ‘RC30’ is a great example of a homologation superbike that remains a coveted modern classic among collectors. The bike has evidently been ridden and enjoyed, but also appears to have been kept in excellent condition by its current and previous owners. A joy simply to behold, this RC30 also deserves to be taken out in the right weather and road conditions, where its performance and inimitable character can be experienced in full.
