1987 FORD CAPRI 280 BROOKLANDS

This 1987 Ford Capri 280 ‘Brooklands’ is a handsome example of the run-out special edition, presented in smart condition and with a recent service. It is powered by a 158bhp 2.8-litre Cologne V6, which powers the rear wheels via a five-speed manual transmission. The odometer displays 81,000 miles.

Created in 1986 to mark the retirement of the Capri, 1,038 examples of the 280 model were built at Ford’s Halewood facility. A particularly well-equipped limited-edition model, each was finished in the distinctive hue of Brooklands Green, and featured a grey leather interior with Recaro front seats, 15-inch alloy wheels and a limited-slip differential.

This Capri 280’s iconic bodywork is said to be in fantastic order, with flush, even shut lines and no evidence of any prior accident damage. Having been fully resprayed in 1999 while owned by ‘Dr Brooklands’ – the owner of www.brooklands280.com – the Brooklands Green metallic paintwork is reported to be in impressive overall condition, though with a smattering of stone chips around the lower front end. Applied once the paintwork was completed, the reproduction red and white decals on the flanks and tail are a perfect match for the originals, and show no signs of damage. This Capri rides on the correct set of 15-inch seven-spoke alloy wheels, which have a very few minor kerb scratches on their rims.

On stepping into the cabin, you are met by a pair of heavily bolstered Recaro sports seats, which are clad in grey leather and accented by red piping. Given their age, both are in very good order. While there is the expected creasing on their surfaces and wear on the driver’s outer bolster, this could be greatly improved by a reconnolising treatment. The seller reports that there are no known issues with any of the car’s switchgear or other electrical items.

This Capri’s most recent routine maintenance was carried out in March 2021 at 80,754 miles by West End Garage, Nairn. As well as an engine oil and filter change, this also included replacement of the thermostat, water pump, rocker cover gasket and one of the rear wheel bearings, to bring the car up to superb standard. Prior to this, the car was serviced in August 2019 at 80,554 miles when the rear wheel cylinders, ignition control module and upper front strut mounts were replaced, while an oil service was performed in August 2013 at 76,001 miles.

Its last MOT test was conducted on 22 August 2020 at 80,642 miles, which resulted in a pass after the offside steering rack gaiter was replaced. While it was noted that there was an oil leak near the oil filter, caused by a worn o-ring, and slight play in the nearside front wheel bearing, these issues have since been rectified with proof on file.

The car will be accompanied by an excellent history file including its original service book and a large number of past invoices and receipts detailing its maintenance. Every original MOT from new plus both sets of original keys are also present.

Representing the culmination of the Ford Capri’s 18 years of production and featuring a unique colour scheme and a number of luxury appointments, the 280 ‘Brooklands’ is a particularly desirable version of the iconic British coupe. Highly original and unmodified, bar a full stainless steel exhaust system, this example is described as being in superb running order, and will make a fine addition to any Ford fanatic’s collection.
