1987 AUDI UR QUATTRO

This Audi Quattro 10v is a stunning, usable example of a truly game changing every-day performance hero. Sporting a black-on-black specification with smoked taillights and fade-out Audi side graphics, it looks every inch the eighties icon. Under the bonnet sits a 2.1-litre turbocharged inline-five, producing around 197bhp and sending it through a five-speed manual gearbox to that famous four-wheel-drive system. The odometer indicates 128,557 miles, yet remains in excellent condition having been partly restored.

First registered in March 1987, there are eight previous registered keepers on the log book, with the seller having enjoyed and maintained it for over three years.

The exterior presents very well indeed, having previously been resprayed in deep metallic black. The original 15-inch alloy wheels are unmarked and the correct OEM graphics feature all around, including the four-ring side decals and the ‘quattro’ logos on the windows. The seller notes a small amount of bubbling on the front arches just behind the front wheels, and there is a little more again on the leading edge of the bonnet above the fourth Audi ring – shown in the close-up photos in the gallery. All the rubbers and plastic trim pieces are straight and correct. The only visible modification is a sports exhaust with DTM-style twin upswept tailpipes to amplify that characteristic five-cylinder roar.

Inside, the textured vinyl trim still fits perfectly over the dashboard and around the recessed air vents. There is minor wear at the front of the driver’s seat squab, although the black leather upholstery is otherwise aging very well indeed. The passenger sun visor vinyl, though, is pulling away from around the edges of the plastic mirror. The door cards have been refitted, and the gear knob replaced with another OEM item. The LCD digital dashboard lights up clearly, and the stereo head unit is an aftermarket item. The seller notes that the heated seats are not working, but there are no other known electrical faults.

The most recent service was performed by the seller in May 2020, during which they replaced the oil and all the filters. The service history shows some light restorative work was carried out in July 2017 by Quattro specialist QST, including a full engine service, new clutch slave cylinder, replacement front suspension top mounts, four-wheel alignment, new intercooler mount, plus CO2 and idle adjustment. The central locking was also reactivated, along with the car’s Voice Synthesiser which is now fully functional. The heater fan has been renewed and the retro-fit immobiliser wiring removed, also by QST. The cam belt and water pump were changed in 2015 when the car had 125,103 miles on the odometer.

The Quattro had its most recent MOT in November 2019, when it had an advisory for deteriorated track rod end dust caps (new ones have been purchased but not fitted). The tyres have been on the car since 2015 and remain in good condition.

The car’s stamped history initially runs from its first service in January 1988 up to February 1999 (at approximately 97,000 miles), after which there is a gap up to October 2015 – however, the MOT certificates dating from 1996 and receipts for other work done on the car in this time show that it continued to be maintained. The original handbook and service book are included with the car, while a tool kit and jack can be found in the boot with the Bosch Autojet aerial system.

This Quattro has been used regularly throughout its life, maintained accordingly, and is ready to be fired up whenever you are. It’s a modern classic for all seasons, a cultural and motorsport icon that is perfectly happy being driven on a daily basis and offering old-school feel with modern performance.
