1986 PORSCHE 928 S2

This Porsche 928 S2 is a stylish and powerful modern classic, presented in highly original condition and with a rare factory specification. It is powered by the 310hp 4.7-litre M28/22 engine, which is coupled to a four-speed automatic transmission. Interestingly, this car was ordered with the ‘M251’ option gearbox with shorter final drive to enhance acceleration, as well as the wider rear track. The odometer shows 118,600 miles from new.

As a 928 S2, this car is equipped with power steering as standard, as well as the uprated brakes and suspension for the 1986 model year. Fitted with the automatic transmission, as the vast majority of 928s were, this S2 is a consummate grand tourer that combines legendary Porsche engineering with comfort and practicality.

Supplied by Porsche main dealer Charles Follett in London, this car was first registered in August 1986. There are just three previous keepers on the log book. It has been owned by the seller for the last three years, who has enjoyed around 2,500 miles behind the wheel.

The bodywork itself is in good order, with flush shut lines down the flanks and impressive panels gaps around the front and rear bumpers. Its Guards Red paint is believed to be the factory finish, and as such it does display blemishes commensurate with the age and mileage. There are various spots of lacquer peel around the body, as well as some flaking paint on the offside door, and a small area of bubbling at the leading edge of the bonnet. There is also a large paint chip in the offside front wing. Overall, the appearance is of an honestly presented and very original car, which wears its miles well.

All of the light lenses are in good order, with just a small chip in the offside front fog light, and the headlight pods raise and lower as they should. The sunroof works well, and while the window seals and spoiler trims are faded, they do not appear to be perishing. It rides on the original set of 16-inch alloy wheels, which have only very minor blemishes.

In the cabin, it is fitted with the optional electrically adjustable sport seats, which are upholstered in black leather with red piping to match the bodywork. There is some wear and discolouration around the front seat bolsters, and some age-related marks elsewhere, but generally the trim is in good order throughout - again presenting in original and unrestored condition. Some fixing screws are present on the passenger side of the dashboard, which may have been for a car phone mount. The factory-fitted Blaupunkt Toronto SQR stereo is still present, but while the radio works, the cassette player does not. The seller notes that the air-conditioning is also inoperative. It retains the original factory-fitted luggage net.

This 928 S2 has been well maintained and presented in good mechanical condition today. The history file shows comprehensive Porsche history up to approximately 108,000 miles, and it has been looked after by specialists since then. Its most recent maintenance was carried out in March 2020 at 117,935 miles, by marque specialist Eporsch in Surrey. This consisted of an oil and filter service, as well as some cosmetic works.

Prior to this, it was also seen and serviced by Eporsch in 2019 and 2018. The cam belt was last replaced in May 2017. There are recent invoices in the history file totalling around £7,000, demonstrating the attention that has been given to this Porsche to ensure it is in sound running order.

The last MOT test was carried out on 5 July 2019 at 117,450 miles, which resulted in a first-time pass with only one advisory about some corrosion on the offside rear outer sill. The seller states that the chassis is structurally sound though, and that the car is always garaged when not in use. There are Goodyear Eagle tyres on the rear, and budget items on the front, which are all in good condition.

Accompanying the car are all of the original books, including the driver’s manual and the stamped maintenance record. The tools, jack, and spare wheel are also present.

Peter Morgan’s buyers’ guide for the 928 calls the grand tourer “a sure-footed, confident machine with a gorgeous soundtrack”, adding that its “surprisingly sharp performance is matched with a sumptuous feel of majestic progress along the road”.

This Porsche 928 S2 is an excellent grand tourer, which is packed with period 1980s character, and has just three previous keepers. Its chassis and powertrain make it well suited to longer journeys across the continent, and this particular car benefits from the rare shorter-ratio transmission to enhance its sporting edge. While the next owner could choose to commission some cosmetic rejuvenation, this is an eminently usable modern classic that remains in superb original condition, having been maintained solely by Porsche main dealers and specialists.
