1986 PORSCHE 911 CARRERA 3.2 SUPER SPORT TARGA

This Porsche 911 Carrera 3.2 Super Sport Targa is a very rare right-hand-drive example of the breed, which has undergone nut-and-bolt restoration works and now presents in superb condition throughout. It is equipped with the 3.2-litre flat-six, producing around 228bhp, coupled with a five-speed manual transmission. The odometer currently indicates 56,641 miles.

An original UK-market car, this 911 was specified from the factory with the ‘Super Sport Equipment’ (designation M491, also known as the ’SSE’) package, consisting of the Turbo-look flared body, Turbo suspension, four-piston fixed calipers, a black lip spoiler at the front and the iconic ‘whale tail’ spoiler at the rear.

First registered in February 1986, this 911 has been with its current keeper for six years. Although the V5C indicates five previous keepers, this Porsche was in the custody of a single owner for nearly 30 years, transferring between him personally and his business several times; those transfers being fully documented within the extensive history file.

The car underwent a full mechanical and cosmetic refurbishment from 2015 to 2019. As the duration of that recommissioning might suggest, the works became something of a labour of love for the present owner who instructed a Porsche-approved bodyshop to carry out their work with scant regard to the cost. The engine was parted from the chassis and given a comprehensive rebuild. The car was lavished with a swathe of main dealer-supplied parts and the eventual value of the works exceeded £75,000. It is believed to be one of only 14-right-hand-drive Super Sport Targa models on the road, and one of just three with the early 915 transmission, complete with matching numbers. 

The bodywork of this 911 is in excellent condition, with the vendor noting it was resprayed from Grand Prix White to Dark Blue by the one previous owner in 1998, though it has since been reverted back to its factory colour scheme. The finish is now in exemplary shape but for the inevitable light stone chips to the front end. Some very light discolouration can be seen near the offside front sidelight, though the lenses all appear to be in good shape and the Targa roof is free of any notable scuffs. The car rides on a set of 16-inch Fuchs wheels which are in superb order.

Inside, the black leather and pinstripe cloth upholstery is in great order, with the vendor noting that a few light blemishes were purposefully left in place during the restoration to retain character and originality. Some light creasing is present on the seats, along with minor wear to the steering wheel, gear knob, and dashboard. The cabin has been fitted with the up-to-date Porsche Classic navigation system boasting full colour navigation, Bluetooth integration for music streaming and hands-free telephone use while retaining the period ‘look’ of the original system. The Porsche also boasts the usual refinements of central locking and electric mirrors, while all of the electrics are believed to work as they should.

Serviced annually in the vendor’s custody - regardless of mileage - the most recent routine maintenance was undertaken in May 2021, where specialist technicians at APR Garage Services in Glasgow carried out a service and overall general health check following its restoration.  

The most recent MOT test was on 18 January 2021 at 56,474 miles, which resulted in a clean pass with no advisories or defects. Accompanying the vehicle is the original service book and tool kit, along with a raft of MOT certificates and a detailed image gallery of the restoration work.

This Porsche 911 Carrera 3.2 Super Sport Targa is a rare example of the special ‘Turbo look’ model, which underwent extensive restoration from 2015 to 2019, and has been enjoyed sparingly since. Now presented in superb condition, it would make an exciting weekend toy and is ready to exploit the best of the summer weather with its next owner.
