1986 LAND ROVER DEFENDER 90 STATION WAGON

This Land Rover Defender 90 Station Wagon is a restored example of the breed with an upgraded engine, and which is offered in excellent condition. Under the bonnet is a 3.5-litre V8, coupled to a five-speed manual transmission. The odometer currently indicates 138,367 miles from new.

First registered in June 1986, the current owner acquired this Land Rover five years ago, just as it was coming to the end of a comprehensive restoration. The original chassis had been refurbished and galvanised, a V8 engine was fitted in place of its original four-cylinder motor using genuine Land Rover parts, and it was also given a new clutch and an Ashcroft gearbox, a new radiator, fans, restored carburettors and a new fuel system and tank.

The durable bodywork of this Defender is in good shape and comes finished with resprayed Galway Green paintwork, which has some minor imperfections, slight paint reactions around a few of the fixtures, and more noticeable wear near the fuel filler cap. The black mud flaps, recognisable grille and galvanised front bumper are in very good order. It rides on a set of 16-inch pewter grey ‘Freestyle’ alloy wheels, as seen on the 50th Anniversary model, and a matching spare is affixed to the rear door carrier.

Inside, the condition of the Grey Techno fabric seats has been described as excellent, with the vendor noting that the seats have been entirely re-trimmed. The grey plastic door cards present with some scratches and discolouration, though the dashboard trim and main contact points are all free of any major scuffs. A custom-made Superspoke steering wheel has been installed alongside a Sony stereo system, and no electrical faults have been detected. The protective rubber flooring in the rear has some age-related scuffs and scratches, though the rear seating is in good condition.

The last routine maintenance was undertaken in January 2021, where technicians at J Earl Auto changed the engine oil and filter, before fitting a new windscreen wiper motor and a Slickshift gear lever kit.

The most recent MOT test was on 3 February 2021 at 138,298 miles, which resulted in a clean pass with no advisories or defects. The wheels come wrapped with new Continental CrossContact tyres, while the spare comes with Michelin rubber. Accompanying the vehicle is a small selection of maintenance invoices and MOT certificates.

This Land Rover Defender 90 is a well-presented modern classic, which benefits from an upgrade to the more powerful and characterful V8, plus a re-trimmed interior. With its original chassis restored and galvanised, and with its body sprayed in handsome Galway Green, this Defender has been given a new lease of life, and is now ready for many more miles in the hands of its next owner.
