1986 FERRARI MONDIAL 3.2 CABRIOLET

This Ferrari Mondial 3.2 Cabriolet is a sophisticated open-top 1980s sports car, which is also a rare model in the marque’s back catalogue and has just one owner from new. Under the engine cover is a 270hp 3.2-litre naturally aspirated V8 with four valves per cylinder, coupled to a five-speed manual transmission driving the rear wheels. The odometer shows just 81,715 km.

With acceleration from 0-100km/h in just 7.4 seconds, even today its performance is impressive, with pace on par with junior ‘hot hatches’. In total, it is understood that Ferrari built just 810 examples of the Mondial 3.2 Cabriolet, making it rarer than even the celebrated F40. First registered in April 1986, this European delivery car currently resides in Germany, and has been in single private ownership for the last 35 years. This gentleman used the car for 20 years at a holiday home in Mallorca, but brought the car back to Germany regularly for servicing.

Today, the bodywork presents in very good condition, and the Rosso Corsa paintwork remains looking smart and glossy. The vendor notes that there is a small scratch in the paint on the boot lid, and some small stone chips around the black lower valances. With the 3.2 Mondial, Ferrari changed the body trims to be colour-coded, giving it a much more contemporary appearance. This car also retains the five-spoke alloy wheels with period-correct metric tyres. Its black soft top is in very good condition, as is the tonneau cover.

Inside, the Nero leather upholstery is still in good order for its age, with the driver’s seat in particular showing some more noticeable wear and tear to the headrest, outer bolster, and slight sagging of the base cushion. The door cards have some small scuffs from entry and exit. While its switchgear is all present and correct, the vendor notes that the rear electric window on the driver’s side opens very slowly, and the electric release for the boot lid sometimes fails - though the manual latch can always be operated.

The last scheduled maintenance was an oil service carried out in February 2021. Prior to this, in August 2019 at 81,300 km, Ferrari specialist Frank Fehr in Butzbach, Germany, carried out a major service that included renewal of the timing belt, adjustment of the valve clearances, new seals, an overhaul of the brakes, and partial refurbishment of the suspension, with a significant amount invested in improving the car. The boot floor panel was also renewed with an OEM replacement part. A summary of the service history is included below, and the car is understood to have received oil changes in the 1990s at a local workshop in Mallorca, though these are undocumented.

It was subject of a detailed roadworthiness inspection in February 2021, which was an in-depth check to permit the vehicle to wear historic number plates, and no warnings were issued. All four tyres are in good condition, date-coded to 2014 and with around 7mm of tread.

Accompanying the car is the original vehicle registration certificate, original sales invoice, the owner’s manual, various valuation reports dating back to 1990, and original accessories including the tool roll, jacking kit, emergency torch light, and full-size spare wheel.

This Ferrari Mondial 3.2 Cabriolet is a stylish performance car that remains in very good condition. While the next owner may wish to make some minor improvements to the interior trim, this car benefits from a recent major service, single-owner provenance, and is presented in the ever-popular hue of Rosso Corsa. It would be a fun addition to any collection, and could be an enjoyable entry point to classic Ferrari ownership.
