1986 BMW M635CSI

This BMW M635CSi is a superb example of a consummate modern classic GT car, and one of the earliest M-badged BMWs. It is powered by a 3.5-litre ‘M88’ straight-six producing around 282bhp - an evolution of the motor first seen in the M1 supercar - coupled to a five-speed manual transmission. The odometer shows 78,866 miles.

A compelling combination of sports car performance with a luxurious cabin, just 524 examples of the M635CSi were built in right-hand drive, and fewer than 100 are understood to remain on the road or under SORN - and this is one of those cars.

This M635CSi was first registered in May 1986, and there are eight previous UK keepers on the log book. The DVLA history also shows that the car was previously registered overseas at some point. The current keeper acquired the car in May 2014, but has used it only sparingly, covering around 1,000 miles since then.

Its bodywork is in excellent condition, with flush shut lines and even panel gaps all around the car. There is no sign of any prior damage, and the Arctic Blue metallic paint presents in superb order, with a deep and even shine. The vendor reports that there are hardly any stone chips, and that in many places it has the condition of a brand-new car. The pinstripes down the flanks are still present, and is the boot spoiler and the 15-inch alloy wheels.

The interior does not disappoint, either. Its beige cloth upholstery is in remarkably good order, with chequered centre panels and no rips or other damage to the material. There is some slight bobbling of the fabric on the bolsters, but otherwise the cabin trim is in great shape. It is equipped with electric windows, air-conditioning, the correct three-spoke steering wheel, and even the period-perfect Blaupunkt Bologna radio cassette player. There are no reported faults, and no warning lights on the dashboard.

The last scheduled maintenance was carried out in October 2020 at 78,853 miles by BMW specialist Graham Martin Automotive. This consisted of an engine oil and filter service, and a general check-over. Prior to this, it was also serviced in July 2018 and April 2016, with the former including a new battery, and the latter including some new bulbs and front anti-roll bar links.

The most recent MOT test was on 9 October 2020 at 78,853 miles, when it achieved a first-time pass with no advisories or defects noted. Over the last 15 years of MOT tests, covering some 14,000 miles of road use, the car has only failed twice - the first for a slack handbrake, the second for worn windscreen wipers - and has not had any notes in other years, which is testament to its impressive condition.

Its wheels are shod in the correct Michelin TRX tyres, which all appear in good condition. There is around 5.5m of tread across the front tyres, and 4mm-5mm on the rear tyres.

Accompanying the car is the owner’s handbook and the service record, as well as a box file of invoices from BMW specialists evidencing the care and attention the car has received over the years, including from the leading experts at Munich Legends and Classic Heroes. A copy of BMW Car magazine, for which this M635CSi was once part of a ‘Classic Icons’ cover feature, is also included in the sale, as are the original tools.

This BMW M635CSi is an exceptionally well-presented example of an iconic performance car. The vendor reports that it has received careful maintenance throughout its life, which is reflected by its impressive condition today. It runs and drives beautifully, and is a real treat to experience on the road. Chances to acquire such a smart example of this modern classic are few and far between, so this is an opportunity not to be missed.
