1985 MERCEDES-BENZ (R107) 500 SL

KEY FACTS

A beautiful example of the elegant and luxurious modern classic roadster, benefitting from recent restoration and with a detailed maintenance history.
Under the bonnet is the 241bhp 5.0-litre V8, driven through a four-speed automatic transmission.
The bodywork and paint were fully refreshed in 2019, with any corroded panels being replaced before the car was treated to a comprehensive respray.

EQUIPMENT AND FEATURES

This 500 SL retains its factory colour scheme of Cabernet Red metallic with Anthracite leather interior, accented by burl walnut veneered trim.
Equipment includes the optional rear seats, heated front seats and electric windows, while entertainment is provided via a more modern Sony radio/CD player.
The car will be supplied with all of its original handbooks in a document wallet, including a stamped service book and continuation book. The seller is also providing a meticulously assembled folder of service invoices, parts receipts and MOT test certificates, as well as the car’s original tool kit and first aid kit.
The appropriate registration ‘MBZ 5009’ will be included in the sale.

CONDITION

Today, the bodywork is in excellent condition, following the car’s restoration in 2019, when any corroded panels and other worn components were replaced with parts from renowned specialist The SL Shop, among other suppliers.
Having been fully resprayed, the paintwork is pristine, with a smooth and glossy appearance around the entire vehicle.
Furthermore, the black convertible hood is very smart, having a few age-related blemishes but remaining watertight. The two original metal hood release tools are also stored in the glove compartment.
This charming roadster rides on the correct set of 14-inch ‘Baroque’ or ‘Mexican Hat’ alloy wheels, which were refurbished during the car’s restoration, and are unmarked.
Inside, this SL features its original upholstery and trim, which is in good overall condition, with some minor creases and marks on the seats and an attractive patina throughout.
There are no known mechanical or electrical faults.
The car’s last MOT test was conducted on 15 February 2021 at 101,090 miles, resulting in a first-time pass with one advisory for wear to the edge of the offside front tyre.

SERVICE HISTORY

This 500 SL’s most recent routine maintenance was carried out in March 2021 at 101,135 miles by marque specialist John Haynes Mercedes. A full service and inspection, this included an engine oil and filter change, along with replacement of the rear ABS sensor, lubrication of the throttle linkage and renewal of the gearbox oil.
Prior to this, Quantum Motors performed a full service including a spark plug change in July 2019 at 100,693 miles, and a minor service was carried out by M. Hyland Motor Services in March 2019 at 100,221 miles, when the battery was also replaced.
