1985 FERRARI MONDIAL QV CABRIOLET

This Ferrari Mondial QV Cabriolet is a classic open-top sports car, which has an unmistakably 1980s silhouette and a demure colour scheme. Under the engine cover is a 2.9-litre naturally aspirated V8 - with four valves per cylinder, hence ‘Quattrovalvole’ - coupled to a five-speed manual transmission. The odometer indicates 43,874 km, though this is not warranted.

An original ‘B’ code European delivery car, this Ferrari has been owned by the vendor for the last five years. Between 1998 and 2016, and possibly earlier, the car was with an owner in Florida, during which time it evidently had the US-specification rear reflectors and high-level brake light installed. However, during this period, its title was incorrectly registered as being chassis ZFFLC15E000057575. US type headlights were also fitted, but these were switched back to European specification lights in 2016.

Its bodywork is believed to have never suffered from any accident damage, and still presents well, with smooth shut lines. Some of the exterior trim would benefit from some attention, including the front bumper plastic, and the sill covers along the flanks; while the lower front bumper has also been slightly damaged, on the driver’s side in particular. Its Marrone Metallizzato finish was resprayed some years ago, and today there are various small blemishes and imperfections, including superficial scratches and paint chips.

The car has a brown fabric soft top roof, which has evidently been renewed, as it retains a deep colour and no rips or tears in the material. At the rear, a US-specification third brake light is installed on the boot lid, which the next owner could remove if desired to take back to the original European model appearance. It rides on a correct set of metric 180 TR 390 five-spoke alloys, which are in very good order.

Stepping inside, this Mondial QV is trimmed in brown leather - believed to be the period ‘Testa di Moro’ colour - which appears to be all original. Both front and rear seats are visibly worn, with some discolouration and also a circular cut in the driver’s seat base. The door cards are also damaged, with a split on the driver’s side panel, and a tear in the cover of the door speaker on the passenger side. The dashboard and transmission tunnel trim still present well, and the steering wheel and gear knob are also correct. The only aftermarket addition is the Pioneer stereo head unit.

For the last four years, this Mondial QV has remained in storage, but in 2016 it was put through the German TÜV inspection process. Some refurbishment work was carried out in preparation for this test, including various electrical improvements, new front compartment gas struts, and EU specification headlights, at a cost of €3,474 - and it subsequently passed.

This Ferrari Mondial QV Cabriolet is a 1980s sports car that presents as a straight and solid example, but which would now benefit from some cosmetic refurbishment, both to the paintwork as well as the interior trim. Having been in storage for four years, this Mondial should require little more than a small service before taking back to the road, where it can be enjoyed as a classy and unusual open-top cruiser for the spring and summer months.
