1984 SUZUKI HATCH 800

This very neat 1984 Suzuki Hatch is clean, original, and would make a fun retro runabout for city living. It benefits from the more powerful 796cc six-valve single overhead cam motor, which is mated to a two-speed automatic transmission. The odometer reads 66,278 km.

The Suzuki Hatch is the first generation of the Suzuki Alto, which is still going strong today. Australian cars had the ‘Hatch’ naming for the Alto for a few years in the early ‘80s before the second generation car was introduced. First registered in July 1984, this is one of the later examples of the first generation model.

The car has never been in an accident and its body panels and trim are in good condition. The paintwork is very good considering the car’s age, presenting with only modest imperfections and scratches around the car. The bonnet and left-hand side of the car were repainted at some point, and the paintwork on the bonnet is not perfect. If you look closely, some of the paint colours are very slightly mismatched.

Inside, the original upholstery is intact and generally in good order. The vinyl trim shows a few small splits on the driver’s seat bolster and side panel, but the cloth seat facings and rest of the seat covers present well. The owner notes that the driver’s seat belt needed to be replaced and only a black belt could be sourced, so its colour does not match the originals. Its steering wheel is also a later aftermarket item. All of the controls and electronics all work well, with no warning lights.

Service history is not fully documented, however the owner notes that the engine oil has a clean appearance, and the car drove smartly on a four-hour test drive. The handbook, owner’s manual and even a Suzuki t-shirt will be sold with the car.

The Suzuki passed its most recent roadworthy test without any warnings or advisories, and the registration is current until September 2021. Its rear tyres are new, and the front items have sufficient tread depth.

This 1984 Suzuki Hatch is a well-preserved example, and now something of a rare sight on the road. It has never been restored, but has equally never seen any significant damage, presenting with only minor wear and tear. In a time when many modern commuter cars are somewhat bland, this characterful small hatchback is a great throwback to a simpler era of motoring.
