1984 SAAB 900 GLE

KEY FACTS

  • An honest, usable example of the Swedish modern classic, presented in highly original condition.
  • Under the front-hinged bonnet is the 2.0-litre ‘B201’ inline-four, which drives the front wheels via a three-speed automatic transmission.
  • This original UK-market 900 was first registered in March 1984.
  • The V5C records three previous keepers, though it is understood to have had only two owners, with the seller having acquired the car from the first approximately one year ago.

EQUIPMENT AND FEATURES

  • Introduced in 1978 as the successor to the popular 99 model, the Saab 900 featured a number of advancements, including its double wishbone front suspension, aircraft-inspired curved windscreen and ergonomically designed cabin.
  • This 900 is finished in its original hue of Platinum Blue Metallic with grey velour-covered seats and door cards.
  • Equipment includes air conditioning, heated seats, electric front and rear windows and electrically adjustable door mirrors.
  • The car is highly original, and still features all of its factory-fitted glass; however a more modern radio/CD player has been fitted.
  • It rides on a set of 15-inch steel wheels with aluminium-look trims, which are in good shape.
  • This 900 will be accompanied by its tool kit, as well as some paperwork documenting its history and past maintenance.

CONDITION

  • There is no known bodywork damage; however there are patches of corrosion around the car, which would benefit from attention in the near future.
  • The Platinum Blue Metallic paintwork is thought to be entirely original and is in fair overall condition. There are small marks around the panels, including stone chips on the leading edge of the bonnet.
  • The plastic front grille is cracked, the driver’s-side headlight lens is chipped and there are blemishes on both the front and rear bumpers.
  • While the vendor notes that the interior could be improved with a thorough clean, it presents well overall. There are marks and stains on the seats and door cards, but no heavy wear or material damage.
  • The headlining is also sagging and marked, so would benefit from replacement in due course.
  • The seller is not aware of any electrical issues with the vehicle.
  • Its last MOT test was conducted on 30 June 2021 at 65,180 miles, resulting in a pass after a few items were attended to; with advisories noting some corrosion on the offside rear suspension component mounting area, and binding of the offside rear service brake; though the vendor states these advisories were then rectified.

SERVICE HISTORY

  • This Saab 900’s most recent routine maintenance was carried out at 65,180 miles by AP Technix, who performed welding repairs to the offside front suspension component mounting area, as well as replacing various items, including the fuel filter, fuel pump, distributor cap, rotor arm, HT leads, spark plugs, ignition coil, spark amplifier, and all four tyres, as well as the car’s fuel lines.
  • The car’s service history prior to this is unknown.

SUMMARY

A popular choice among those seeking something different among the usual German saloons, the Saab 900 is a distinctive modern classic. Kept by its first owner for 36 years, this example is presented in highly original condition, and benefits from notable recent maintenance work.
