1984 PORSCHE 911 JUNIOR

Every car enthusiast has fond memories of their favourite toys or models as a child; be it a tiny matchbox motor, or a detailed 1:18 scale art-piece. This ‘half scale’ Porsche 911 Junior is a mini replica of the 1980s Carrera Cabriolet. Originally sold through Porsche dealers, it is believed that only 224 were built, and few survive today. Being one of the final 911 Juniors produced, with a chassis number 223, it is thought to be the only example sold new to an Australian owner.

It is powered by a 2.2hp four-stroke Honda pull-start engine coupled to a manual gearbox with two forward speeds and reverse, and three fully operational pedals. It is capable of reaching a top speed of around 30 km/h and to make the experience as authentic as possible, the 911 Junior has independent suspension, working headlights, indicators, brake lights, and horn. It comes with two ignition keys and an original ‘owner’s manual’.

This particular 911 Junior is in highly original condition with the factory exterior Guards Red paint and sticker kit. The original badges are present, with a black ‘Carrera’ badge on the rear deck, along with the emblem on the front hood.

The paintwork has deteriorated over time, caused by a reaction to the fibreglass over the past several decades. This has resulted in bubbling across most surfaces, but the current owner of five years has chosen to retain the factory paint for the sake of originality. Some of paint has also flaked away around the bumpers.

The original headlights lights are operational, as are the brake lights and turn signals. The Junior rolls on a set of four mini ‘Fuchs’ style wheels wrapped with Goodyear Terra tyres.

Following the theme of the rest of the car, the interior is modelled as a small-scale replica of the 911 Carrera Cabriolet, and features black vinyl-covered adjustable seats, 911-style steering wheel and a dummy instrument gauge cluster.

The interior is in good condition, with the original black vinyl surfaces showing minimal signs of wear, and little to no wear on ‘Porsche’ embossed rubber floor mat. There is some minor pitting and stress marks to the fibreglass around the base of the windscreen, though this could be rectified should the new custodian choose to repaint the vehicle.

The supplied Porsche owner’s folder with original manual and parts catalogue is an exceptionally rare feature and considered almost irreplaceable with so few cars surviving. The original price of the 911 Junior was $4,500 USD in 1984, or close to A$15,000 adjusted for inflation.

As it was principally a child’s toy, there are some marks and scuffs from use, including some minor scratches around the front right wing, front bumper and rear exhaust outlet. The rearview mirror is damaged, but a new-old-stock replacement will be included in the sale.

The owner last serviced the engine and running gear in October 2020, where the Honda four-stroke received a replacement spark plug, fresh engine oil and a top-up of gearbox oil. It runs and drives with no issues.

Perhaps the ultimate ‘must-have’ addition to any Porsche enthusiast’s collection, and a charming children’s toy; this highly original and exceptionally rare example is an unusual opportunity to own a piece of functional Porsche history.
