1984 PORSCHE 911 3.2 BY RETRO WORKS

This 1984 Porsche 911 by Retro Works is a bespoke backdated build that combines the elegance of the classic 1973 model with the reliability and usability of a later-era Carrera. It is equipped with a 3.2-litre flat-six engine producing around 230bhp, and is paired to a five-speed manual transmission. The car has covered just over 1,000 miles since the shell-up conversion.

An original UK right-hand drive car, it is a 1985 model year example that was first registered in December 1984. A solid and well-maintained 3.2 Carrera, it was selected a few years ago to form the basis of this terrific ‘restomod’. The vendor commissioned the build in 2016 by the Retro Works specialist in West Yorkshire, and took delivery of the finished car two years ago.

This 911 was taken completely back to its original shell and given a full exterior conversion and interior upgrade. It has a pre-1973 style long bonnet, wings and engine lid in steel, along with a Porsche alloy grille and chrome horn grilles. The lightweight front and rear bumpers are fitted with 911S rubber trims and chrome inserts.

The door frames are polished aluminium, complemented by chrome door handles. It is fitted with genuine and period-correct Durant wing mirrors, as well as chrome front and rear window surrounds and headlight rings. A gold badge adorns the bonnet, while an original 911 motif and Porsche script are at the rear. Stone guard protection has been applied to the oil pipes and sills, and the latter are finished with chrome trim strips.

Finished in the handsome hue of Slate Grey with an original sunroof - matching the 911S driven by Steve McQueen in the opening of the 1971 film Le Mans - this 911’s paintwork is in immaculate condition. It has a deep and glossy appearance, with an even finish all the way around the car. A tiny blemish at the offside corner of the bonnet near the windscreen, and a paint chip on the passenger door release pull, were the only imperfections we could find - and are shown in the media gallery.

The exterior is rounded off with a light grey stripe and Porsche script running just above the sills. The door shuts and jambs are all in great shape, and the door and screen rubber seals have all been renewed.

It sits on a staggered set of authentic 16-inch Fuchs alloy wheels, with silver rims and petal spokes over gloss black centres.

Inside the car, the attention to detail is superb. A freshly-trimmed set of Rennsport-style sport seats are finished in black leather with houndstooth checked fabric centre panels. The rear seats are upholstered to match. All-new box weave carpet in dark grey is fitted throughout the cabin, finished with black binding. The headlining has also been renewed.

Both upper and lower panels of the dashboard are smartly trimmed in black leather, double-stitched in contrasting white thread. The same finish has been carried across to the door caps, armrests, door pulls and the rear quarter panels next to the back seats. It matches the style and stitching of the Momo Prototipo steering wheel, which is also emblazoned with the Porsche crest on the horn push.

The dashboard centre panel is of a basket weave design, with polished metal edges, and houses a retro-style radio with Bluetooth connectivity. Ahead of the driver, the classic five-gauge instrument cluster features silver dial surrounds with black facings and orange needles. The car is fitted with electric windows, four Kenwood speakers and steel door lock pins.

Opening the engine lid reveals a 3.2-litre, air-cooled flat-six in fine fettle. It has been fitted with SSI heat exchangers, and was subject to a full top-end rebuild during the backdating process. There is no sign of any smoke on start-up. A completely new exhaust system in stainless steel was also installed by Retro Works, with a Dansk silencer and twin exhaust pipes.

A fresh set of Bilstein shock absorbers was fitted during the build, and the brake calipers have all been recently refurbished. A new battery was also installed. In October 2018, this 911 was given a full service by Portiacraft, which included an engine-out replacement of the clutch assembly and flywheel. The Porsche specialist also fitted new galvanised steel heater boxes and replacement cables.

The car’s last MOT was in October 2018, which resulted in a clean pass with no advisories. The wheels are fitted with a set of Continental ContiSportContact N-marked tyres in size 205/55 ZR16 at the front and 225/50 ZR16 at the rear, which are all in great condition with plenty of tread remaining.

Accompanying the car is a folder full of paperwork, including the original stamped service booklet, plus a large number of old registration documents, MOT certificates and invoices for work. It also comes with a period toolkit and Porsche Tequipment car cover with storage bag.

This Porsche 911 3.2 by Retro Works is a beautifully-presented bespoke sports car in outstanding condition. In blending the reliability of a sound 1980s Carrera with the timeless elegance of a 1973-style body, this commission is a fast, usable and handsome everyday road car that is ready to delight a new owner.

Please note: the personalised plate shown on the car is not included in the sale. It will be switched back to an age-related registration plate in the event of a successful auction.
