1984 MERCEDES-BENZ (W123) 280 CE

This W123-series 1984 Mercedes-Benz 280 CE is a well looked-after and comprehensively documented classic in highly original condition. It has a 2.8-litre straight-six motor under the bonnet, which is paired with a four-speed automatic transmission. The odometer reads 256,664 km.

The car was built in January 1984 for the Australian market and first registered in 1984. It was purchased by the vendor six years ago.

Its factory silver paint finish is reported to be in generally excellent original condition, with very few blemishes. Body panels and exterior trim are all in similarly good condition. There are some signs of use and patina that hint at the car’s near-four decades on the road, such as some hardening and cracking of rubber seals and plastic trim, and wear on the rear edge of the driver’s side door and rear vision mirror trim. All of the wheels are in good shape, and overall the exterior is in wonderfully well-preserved condition.

The 280CE looks as good inside as out. The upholstery is original and in excellent condition for its age, and is currently protected by a set of retro deep-pile seat covers. All of the other interior trim presents very well, and the controls all work as they should. A more contemporary Sony head unit has been fitted to the car and blends in to the interior aesthetic well. A tool kit is also included in the sale.

The current owner had the car serviced in December, 2020, which included an oil change and new plugs. Previously it was serviced in 2005 and 2000. The car will be sold with its original full owner’s manual as well as extensive documented service history, as shown in the gallery below.

During its previous service and roadworthy inspection, no warnings or advisories were given. The tyres are Kelly PA868 items and are in fair condition, estimated at 50% of their original tread.

Well-cared for and well documented, this W123-series 1984 Mercedes-Benz 280 CE is a highly original example of one of Mercedes’ most successful efforts – an exemplar of the refinement and build quality that typified the marque in this period. It will make a comfortable and classy ride for anyone looking for a sophisticated classic – especially if originality is high on their list of considerations.
