1984 JAGUAR XJ12 SOVEREIGN 5.3 HE

This 1984 Jaguar XJ12 Sovereign 5.3 HE is a handsome example of the marque’s flagship luxury saloon, reported to be in excellent running order. On lifting the bonnet, you are met by the 5.3-litre V12, which produces around 285bhp and 294lb-ft of torque. This drives the rear wheels via a three-speed automatic transmission. The odometer displays 82,131 km, though this is not warranted.

Manufactured in 1984, this left-hand drive Series III XJ12 was specified with metallic grey paintwork over a beige leather interior. Its engine features the high-compression ‘Fireball’ cylinder heads, hence its ‘HE’ (High Efficiency) designation. Evidently well-cared for over the years; it is now offered for sale via the trade in Italy.

Today, the car’s bodywork is said to be in very good order, with no evidence of any prior accident damage. While it is not known whether it has been resprayed in the past, the grey metallic paintwork is in good condition, with only a few very minor age-related marks. The brightwork, including the front grille and window trim strips is in great shape and has been polished to a high shine. This XJ12 rides on a desirable set of 15-inch ‘pepperpot’ alloy wheels, which would benefit from refurbishment in due course to correct a few minor kerb scuffs, scratches and other blemishes on their surfaces.

Inside, the cabin is trimmed in beige leather upholstery, which presents well, though there are creases and general signs of wear on the seats, and the door cards are slightly discoloured. Overall, the trim presents well, though there are some cracks and chips on the face of the dashboard, and the plastic gear selector surround has also cracked. The car is fitted with a Sony radio/cassette player, a boot-mounted CD changer and a digital trip computer. All of the buttons, switches and electrical items are reported to work, and there are no warning lights displayed on the dashboard.

Described by the vendor as being mechanically very strong, this luxury saloon is reported to have been routinely maintained to a high standard. Most recently, it underwent a full service in 2020, and it passed its last Revisione roadworthiness inspection without a single fault or warning. All four wheels are shod in Ovation tyres, which are in good condition and appear to have ample tread remaining.

Powered by a smooth V12 linked to an automatic transmission, it would be the ideal candidate for cross-continental road trips, but could just as easily be put into service as a distinguished daily driver.
