1984 FERRARI 400i AUTOMATIC

This Ferrari 400i Automatic is a wonderful example of the marque’s luxurious sporting grand tourer, which presents as a highly original car. Under the bonnet is a 310hp 4.8-litre fuel-injected V12, coupled to the three-speed automatic transmission that was common to Jaguar, Rolls-Royce and Bentley cars of the same era. The odometer indicates just 49,493 km.

Reported to have been first registered in June 1984, this 400i Automatic has been in the care of the current owner for the last seven years, and in 2018 it received more than €20,000 worth of mechanical refurbishment and improvement. It is currently in Germany, registered in Regensburg.

The Ferrari has no known prior accident damage, and it presents very smartly today in a resprayed black hue - which is believed to be the original factory colour, given the code sticker still present on the car. The vendor reports some marks on the bonnet, and the photos below also show some chips in the paint around the front end, and minor scuff marks on the bumpers. Overall, it looks impressive for its age, riding on the correct five-spoke alloy wheels, which have only small grazes on the rims in a few places.

In the cabin, the black leather upholstery is believed to be entirely original, and it is reported to be in good condition throughout. There is some visible wear on the driver’s seat outer bolster, but overall it looks to be in great shape, with only minor marks and nicks to the interior trim that you would expect on a 36-year-old car. It is equipped with a Blaupunkt Hamburg radio and cassette player, and features electric windows, as well as air-conditioning for the front and rear. At the rear, the boot lining carpet is starting to lift at the edges, but in general the luggage area presents well.

In February 2018, this 400i was the subject of a major service at CarTech Knowledge in Ismaning, Germany. As well renewing the oils and filters for the engine and gearbox, the distributor cap, rotor arm, and header tank were replaced. It also received fresh spark plugs, plus new oil cooler hoses, radiator hoses, and heater valves. Two new engine mounts were installed, along with various Silentbloc bushes, and the battery holder was refurbished. Its interior was also given a thorough clean, and there is an invoice for around €22,000 in the history file.

In June 2013 at 47,517 km, technicians at Inhaber Fredy Schuller in Munich carried out a comprehensive inspection, and then renewed the engine oil, differential oil, and brake fluid, and installed various new vacuum hoses. The door locks were refurbished, and the air-conditioning was also overhauled; with a new compressor, coupling and pulley, oil tank and servo pump.

The car is covered by a valid TÃœV roadworthiness certificate until August 2022. Its wheels are fitted with period-correct Michelin TRX tyres, which are reported to be in good condition with around 6.5mm of tread remaining.

Accompanying the car are various invoices and registration paperwork, as shown in the gallery. There is also a spare wheel and tyre stored under the boot floor, as well as an original tool kit.

This Ferrari 400i Automatic is a smart and sophisticated four-seater, which is presented in very good mechanical and cosmetic condition. While not a concours contender, this is a well-presented classic Ferrari that would no doubt be a treat to drive at speed on the open road, with the driver enjoying its comfort and the song of its naturally aspirated V12.
