1984 ALFA ROMEO ALFETTA GTV6 3.0 RACE CAR

This 1984 Alfa Romeo Alfetta GTV6 3.0 is one of 219 South African cars built in order to homologate the GTV to go head-to-head with the likes of the BMW 535i in the Group One class of the country’s competitive touring car championship. With the enlarged engine components supplied by Autodelta, and assembled in South Africa, the GTV6 3.0 proved immediately successful: the new model won its debut race at Kyalami in 1983, subsequently achieved a 1-2 finish in the Group One class of the Castrol Three-hour race at Killarney.

The car offered here is a superb track-oriented example of the marque’s beloved classic coupe, which has been uprated from its original road car guise with a number of high-performance modifications. Under the bonnet sits a modified 287bhp version of the 3.0-litre V6, coupled with a five-speed manual transmission driving the rear wheels. The odometer currently indicates its pre-restoration mileage of 38,000 km – though much of the car presents as-new given its fresh rebuild.

This modified Alfetta GTV6 is currently road-registered in Germany and also meets Appendix K of the FIA’s Historic Technical Passport guidelines, following a five-year cooperative build between Formula GT in Munich and Projekt Lucky Racing. Its bodywork has been lightened to just over 1,000kg, while remaining within Appendix K regulations, with steel doors and boot lid, bumpers, and all glass windows. All of the mechanicals have been fully overhauled and upgraded.

Along with the lightweight flywheel and crankshaft, and it now features re-engineered carburettors, along with new valves, pistons, springs, camshafts, rods, a titanium exhaust, and a handmade stainless steel manifold. An oil cooler, aluminium radiator, and a Super B20P lithium battery have been fitted, while the car now rides on Intrax suspension and an overhauled transmission. The car is stopped by four-piston AP aluminium brake callipers in the front and aluminium Alfaholics Superleggera callipers in the rear, as well as a set of Ferodo racing pads and Tarox front discs.

Inside, this Alfa features a Stack ST700SR display system, and two Stack lambda displays, surrounded by the original displays. All instrumentation and switches are in good working order. Switches and fuses for the ignition and petrol pumps are integrated within the original display, and warning lights for oil pressure and water pressure are mounted on the dashboard. The FIA-compliant Sparco seat, harness and fire extinguisher are all within their regulatory expiration dates. Its maiden run since the rebuild took place in Hockenheim in March 2021, and some impressions of that shakedown are captured in the video below.

The lightened bodywork is all in good shape and the condition of its white paintwork has been described as excellent. The finish features numbered racing decals and the flag of South Africa on the roof. The vendor notes the vehicle will be accompanied by a selection of wheels, including 15-inch alloys with Michelin wet-weather tyres, a new set of NTM RZSZ wheels with Toyo semi-slick tyres, as well as a set of unused Avon slick tyres on unused NTM GTAM wheels.

In the cabin, the roll cage and Sparco racing seat present very well, with no signs of any damage. The car has been fitted with a three-spoke racing steering wheel with a yellow 12 o’clock marker, which contrasts well with the period-correct wooden gear knob.

The vendor notes the vehicle comes with a fresh TÃœV, which was undertaken in March 2021. Accompanying the vehicle are its FIA Historic Technical Passport and a small selection of spare parts.

This original South African car is one of a very few remaining cars in existence in the world. It is now an exciting historic race car that comes with an FIA Historic Technical Passport (HTP) valid until 31 December 2029, and remains road legal. Presented in superb condition throughout, this GTV6 would make a great hill climb entrant or very competitive circuit machine.
