1983 OPEL MANTA GTE

KEY FACTS

• A very smart and highly original example of the modern classic coupe.
• Under the bonnet is the numbers-matching 2.0-litre fuel-injected inline-four, which produces around 108bhp and drives the rear wheels via a three-speed automatic transmission.
• First registered in August 1983, this Manta GTE has four previous keepers on the V5C and was acquired by its fifth keeper in September 2016.

EQUIPMENT AND FEATURES

• This GTE is finished in the stylish combination of Anthracite Metallic over a beige vinyl and cloth-trimmed interior with chequered Recaro seats.
• Described by the vendor as one of the most original classics they have ever offered for sale, the car is almost entirely unmodified. While the exhaust has been replaced with a stainless-steel item from the manifold back, this has been custom-made to replicate the original system as far as possible.
• The seller is unsure as to whether the sunroof is original or has been added at a later date.
• Entertainment is provided via a modern stereo with a retro appearance, and a pair of Pioneer speakers was mounted on the parcel shelf in period.
• The car will be accompanied by its user handbook, owner’s manual, original tool kit and two original keys. The vendor is also supplying various receipts detailing its previous maintenance, as well as a selection of MOT test certificates and tax discs.

CONDITION

• No known bodywork damage.
• The vendor states that the front bumper may previously have been repainted, though if so this was some years ago as it now displays a light ‘patina’. The rest of the paintwork is certainly original.
• As is to be expected given the car’s age, there are some imperfections to the finish, including small stone chips on the front bumper and side skirts, and chips on the rear edge of the driver’s door, as well as small areas of corrosion around the boot latch and on the bottom edge of the rear driver’s-side wheel arch.
• Having been recently refurbished, the wheels are in excellent condition, with no noticeable scratches or scuffs.
• Inside, the cabin presents very well indeed, with the slightest signs of use, but no significant wear or discolouration.
• There are no known electrical or mechanical faults with the car, and there are no warning lights displayed on the dashboard.
• This GTE’s last MOT test was conducted on 17 May 2021 at 63,790 miles, resulting in a clean pass.
• Prior to this, it failed its MOT test on 22 March 2021 due to a number of issues, which have since been repaired. These included corrosion on the offside front subframe mounting area and the offside rear lower suspension component mounting area, as well as corrosion on the brake pipes. A few advisories were also issued, but again were rectified before the re-rest in May.

SERVICE HISTORY

• This Manta’s most recent routine maintenance was carried out in June 2021 at 63,880 miles by Durling Specialist Cars. A general service, this included replacement of the engine oil, gearbox oil, differential oil and brake fluid.
• Prior to this, the car was treated to an extensive recommissioning approximately 2,000 miles ago, when a full service was also performed.
• The vendor also notes that all of the car’s rubber hoses have recently been replaced, with upgraded black silicone items used in the engine bay.

SUMMARY

An increasingly rare sight on British roads, the Opel Manta GTE is a stylish and engaging coupe with sprightly performance. Particularly well-preserved and presented in very impressive condition for its age, this GTE is a charming slice of 1980s nostalgia, which could be a great addition to a collection of modern classics.
