1983 OPEL MANTA GTE

This 1983 Opel Manta GTE is a highly original and low-mileage example of the modern classic coupe, presented with genuine low mileage after 16 years of careful storage. Under the bonnet sits the 2.0-litre fuel-injected inline-four producing around 108bhp, coupled with a five-speed manual transmission. The odometer currently indicates 46,560 miles from new.

First registered in November 1983, this GTE has just two previous keepers on the V5C, and has been in the hands of its current keeper for sixteen years. An excellent early history file provides a comprehensive record of the mileage from 1983 through to 2005 – including all but one MOT certificate for that period – and the car is now offered for sale to another enthusiast who will hopefully get it back on the road. The only modification to the original specification is the stereo unit and an aftermarket stainless steel exhaust.

The bodywork of this Manta is all in good shape, presenting with flush shut lines, smooth panels and no suggestion of any prior repairs. The condition of the black paintwork has been described as excellent, and though the vendor has indicated some minor stone chips on the bonnet and a small crack in the front bumper, the finish is believed to be entirely original and retains an even shine. The exterior features headlamp washers and a working sunroof, while the vehicle rides on a set of 14-inch alloy wheels, with just a couple of surface blemishes.

Inside, the seats are trimmed in the original and period-perfect orange and black chequered fabric, which is in excellent condition throughout. The vendor reports the original floor mats are slightly worn, though the door cards and headlining are in good condition. Its three-spoke steering wheel and black plastic dashboard trim are free of any notable scuffs, and an aftermarket face-off head unit has been installed in the past. All of the switchgear currently works as it should, and no electrical faults have been detected.

While the car has been dry stored for 16 years, it has been regularly started and run up to temperature, with the aim of keeping the engine well lubricated. It would of course benefit from a fresh service before using enthusiastically. The last routine maintenance on file was in February 2005 at 46,045 miles, where technicians at Brampton MOT Centre changed the engine oil, filters, spark plugs and coolant – just before the car was subsequently put into storage. Its last MOT test was at the same time, so it will require a fresh 12-month certificate before taking to the road. The Pirelli tyres are reported to be in good condition as regards tread depth, but would benefit from replacement based on their age.

Accompanying the vehicle are the original owner’s manuals, service booklet and sales brochure, along with two keys, and a raft of maintenance and MOT documents covering its early life before being taken off the road.

This Opel Manta GTE is a superb example of the modern classic coupe, which has just three owners from new and presents in excellent condition throughout. Preserved through many years of careful storage, this charming Manta GTE would be a great retro classic to add to any collection, and will certainly trigger plenty of nostalgic and admiring glances when out on the road.
