1983 LAND ROVER SERIES III 88” COUNTY STATION WAGON

KEY FACTS

  • A highly original example of the rugged classic off-roader, with an attractive colour scheme.
  • It is powered by a 2.25-litre inline-four, with four-wheel drive through a four-speed sychromesh manual gearbox.
  • It was acquired by the vendor seven years ago, benefiting from a specialist service history ever since.
  • The odometer indicates 14,640 miles, which is assumed to be 114,640 miles given it is limited to a five-digit readout.

EQUIPMENT AND FEATURES

  • This Series III County Station Wagon still features its original Lucas spotlights, alpine windows, and safari roof.
  • The chassis has recently been replaced with a galvanised alternative, while the spline hubs are later-model OEM units and the car now rides on long wheelbase wheels with Avon Rangemaster tyres.
  • Its suspension has been uprated with parabolic springs and Pro Comp ES3000 shock absorbers.
  • Inside, there are non-original bench seats in the rear, and the front seats have been upgraded to Exmoor Trim heated items with durable covers.
  • An electronic ignition has been installed, and the original Ducellier Distributors unit will be included in the sale.
  • Its original owner’s manual, tool roll and starter handle will be included, along with evidence of its recent specialist service history, a collection of invoices for prior maintenance, two ignition keys, one door key, a spare wheel, six factory-fitment 16-inch wheels, and its original freewheeling hubs.

CONDITION

  • There is no known accident damage to the bodywork.
  • As a ‘workhorse’ Land Rover, its Masai Red paintwork is in fair order, with some scuffs, scrapes and blisters, though it has benefited from some localised repairs.
  • Inside, the replacement seat covers are lightly worn, but with no heavy wear or visible damage.
  • The vendor has indicated that the foam in the original door card inserts and headlining has aged, and now has some tears and some light discolouration.
  • The heater fan is single speed only.
  • The rear windows do not open properly but have been temporarily secured with small zip ties.
  • The most recent MOT test was on 27 July 2021, which was a pass with one advisory to monitor slightly damaged or frayed offside front seat belt webbing.

SERVICE HISTORY

  • Its most recent service was in March 2021 at an indicated 14,602 miles, where technicians at Strathearn Engineering in Aberuthven replaced the engine oil, filter, brake fluid and offside wheel cylinders, before performing a T-piece pipe repair.
  • In February 2020, the engine oil, mid exhaust pipe, exhaust bracket and gasket were replaced.
  • The engine oil, brake fluid, clutch hose, front propshaft, offside engine mount, nearside wheel cylinders and a brake shoe were replaced in February 2019.
  • In February 2018, the engine oil, exhaust back box, starter motor and offside front U-bolts were replaced, along with a tyre and a flange bolt.
  • A new fuel tank was installed in 2016, along with a new radiator and heater matrix in 2015.
  • Through 2014, the car was fitted with a new tub floor with galvanised crossmembers, Exmoor Trim seats and covers, an uprated alternator, halogen headlights, parabolic springs, Pro Comp ES3000 shock absorbers, a replacement propshaft with pinion oil seals and Lemforder steering joints with a new damper and drag link.

SUMMARY

This Land Rover Series III County Station Wagon is a charming example of the breed, with a replacement chassis and a few sensible upgrades. While there is obvious ‘patina’ and blemishes across the paintwork, it has been well maintained in recent years by marque specialists. It is now ready to continue in service as a faithful utility 4x4 or could make a solid basis for more extensive restoration work.
