1982 PORSCHE 911 SC

This Porsche 911 SC is a very smart example of the 1980s sports car, with a handsome period factory colour scheme and a comprehensive service history. As a late model SC, it is powered by the robust 201bhp 3.0-litre air-cooled flat-six, which is paired with a five-speed manual gearbox driving the rear wheels. The seller states that it has covered a total of 151,992 miles, following two previous documented speedometer swaps, as the current odometer indicates 88,624 miles.

First registered on 1 December 1982, this original right-hand drive ‘Super Carrera’ was specified with Light Bronze Metallic paintwork over a brown leatherette interior, and benefits from the ‘Sport’ package, which includes upgraded Bilstein shock absorbers, sport seats and a rear spoiler, which has since been removed. The SC is becoming more desirable by the day as enthusiasts recognise the appeal of the free-revving 3.0-litre engine and daily usability - and this car is a mechanically strong example.

Never believed to have suffered from any accident damage, the zinc-coated steel bodywork is in great shape, with no dents visible on any of the panels. In 2014, a body refurbishment was carried out by CA Bodyworks, when the inner and outer sills were replaced, and the rear spoiler was removed to give a cleaner look – though it will be supplied with the car.

While it is the original factory colour, the Light Bronze Metallic paintwork has been repainted at some stage in the car’s life, and is in good overall condition. There are a few minor blemishes and bubbling in the paint around the tail lights, wheel arches, the bottoms of the A-pillars and below the driver’s side of the windscreen, but it is generally very smart indeed given this SC’s age and mileage. Factory-fitted optional equipment includes electric heated mirrors, tinted glass and a rear wiper.

All of the exterior trim, including the anodised black door handles and window surrounds, is in good order and the headlight lenses are clear and free of any chips or cracks. The underbody has also been sprayed with a protective coating, helping to keep corrosion at bay. This 911 SC still rides on the correct 16-inch forged Fuchs alloy wheels with matte black faces and polished rims. All four are in very good order, without any signs of scrapes or kerb scratches.

Moving to the interior, two-tone brown and tan leatherette covers most of the surfaces, giving a period-perfect look to the cabin. The trim presents extremely well overall, and while there is some general wear and creasing to the seats’ brown bolsters and tan centres, this is commensurate with the car’s age and use. Ahead of the driver is the ever-popular Momo Prototipo steering wheel, which has replaced the original item and remains in very good condition.

This 911 SC was specified with a sliding metal sunroof, providing greater comfort for the driver and their passengers on warm days, as well as an electric aerial and upgraded sound system. The stereo head unit has been replaced with an aftermarket Alpine cassette player. All of the interior switchgear and electrical items are described as working correctly and without fault.

As evidenced by its excellent mechanical condition, this 911 SC has been well cared-for over the years, with repairs and maintenance being carried out at regular intervals. As well as the previously mentioned body refurbishment in 2014, it benefitted from an engine and suspension overhaul at the same time, which was performed by Porsche restoration specialist Historika at a cost of £8,000. This was a photo-documented programme of work, which is shown in the gallery below.

The car’s last scheduled maintenance was carried out on 25 May 2018 at a true 118,000 miles by marque specialist Autofarm, when the engine oil was renewed, along with the brake fluid and wiper blades. It remains in very good order, with its free-revving flat-six performing strongly on the road.

The car’s most recent MOT test was conducted on 29 May 2019 at 88,291 miles, when it passed after the offside rear fog lamp and windscreen washers were repaired, with advisory notices for minor faults with the offside registration lamp and nearside side repeater. Given the six-month MOT extension, its next test is not due until 30 November 2020.

The front wheels are shod with Nexen N3000 tyres in size 205/55 ZR16, while 225/50 R16 Pirelli Cinturato P7 items are fitted at the rear. All four are in good condition and with ample tread remaining.

Accompanying the car are all of its original service books and manuals, a comprehensive history file going back to the car’s first service, and numerous past MOT test certificates and invoices. The seller will also provide a raft of photos documenting the car’s recommissioning and its original rear spoiler.

This Porsche 911 SC is a wonderful 1980s sports car, presented in an attractive period colour scheme and benefitting from a recent mechanical and cosmetic overhaul. Few SCs can boast a similar level of investment in their condition, so this is a great opportunity for an enthusiast to acquire a too-often overlooked 911 that is finally starting to get the recognition it deserves.
