1981 TRIUMPH TR7

KEY FACTS

  • A well-kept example of the classic wedge-shaped British sports car.
  • Under the front-hinged bonnet sits a 2.0-litre inline-four engine, which drives the rear wheels through a five-speed manual transmission.
  • The accompanying Heritage certificate shows that this TR7 remains in its factory colour combination.

EQUIPMENT AND FEATURES

  • Desirable factory options specified by the first owner include the sunroof, five-speed gearbox with high-ratio fifth gear, cast alloy wheels, tinted glass and headlight flasher unit.
  • Other than the aftermarket radio, there are no known modifications to the vehicle.
  • Included with the car is the British Motor Industry Heritage Trust certificate and V5.

CONDITION

  • There is no known damage to the bodywork.
  • The Pharaoh Gold paintwork is in generally good condition with minimal swirl marks noted, though the front offside wing is rusting and flaking, while there are other small patches of bubbling throughout the bodywork.
  • Inside, the cabin has been fitted with replacement new-old-stock carpet, and the seats and headliner show only modest wear, with minor staining to the latter.
  • The vendor notes that the modern stereo does not work, as it is not yet wired in.
  • The latest MOT took place on 25 March 2021 at 103,016 miles, and resulted in a pass with no advisory items. Three weeks earlier, the car initially failed due to items including corrosion around the offside rear suspension, worn ball joints, and excessive play in the steering rack; but these issues and others were subsequently rectified. The earlier test also indicated that the car has had extensive repairs and welding in the past.

SERVICE HISTORY

  • There is no service history with the car, however, the vendor states it appears to have been serviced recently judging by the car’s condition.
  • The vendor has rebuilt the headlights, fitted the new carpet, and renewed the steering rack, as well as the other MOT items.

SUMMARY

With its instantly recognisable 1980s styling and strong factory specification, this Triumph TR7 should prove to be a straightforward light cosmetic restoration project for someone looking to put their stamp on a classic, while still being able to drive and enjoy the car through the summer and autumn.
