1981 SANGLAS 500 S2 V5

This 1981 Sanglas 500 S2 V5 is a rare classic Spanish sports bike, presented in smart overall condition and with low mileage from new. It is powered by a 493cc single-cylinder four-stroke engine, which is mated to a five-speed manual transmission, which gives the bike with its ‘V5’ suffix. The odometer displays 22,114km from new.

Founded in 1942, Sanglas manufactured a number of motorcycles for the Spanish market, culminating in the release of the 500 S2 V5 in 1981, which was to be the marque’s final production motorcycle before they closed their doors the following year.

First registered in August 1981, this 500 S2 V5 was kept by its first German owner for more than 30 years, during which time it was carefully maintained and fitted with an original Sanglas sport fairing. Its current keeper acquired the bike one year ago, and is now offering it for sale to another enthusiast who appreciates these lesser-seen two-wheeled machines.

Today, this handsome classic motorcycle’s fuel tank, front fairing, mudguards and frame present well. There is only a small area of damage to the rear fairing, which is hidden under the seat, and a very slight bulge in the front mudguard. The vendor notes that the bike has been either partly or fully resprayed in the past, and its silver paintwork and red decals are generally in very good condition, though the paint on the tank has flaked slightly.

Elsewhere, there are some minor blemishes on the matt black exhaust headers and the front and rear shock absorbers; though this is commensurate with the bike’s age. The bright metal body trims and light lenses are all in great shape. It rides on a set of seven-spoke cast alloy wheels, which are in good order, and are free of any substantial chips or scratches.

The seat is upholstered in hardwearing black vinyl, which has held up well over the years, with only one small area of damage on its rear left-hand edge, where the fairing and paint is also slightly damaged. The black rubber hand grips are also in good order with few signs of wear, and the yellow-on-black gauges present well. There are no faults with any of the electrical items or controls, and there are no warning lights displayed.

Offered in good running order, this 500 S2 V5 has not required any additional maintenance since its current keeper acquired it one year ago. While the previous owner fully disassembled the engine to inspect it, they were unable to find any faults, and they also carried out a full service.

The bike’s last TÜV test was conducted on 8 May 2020, with no issues being found. Both tyres were replaced in 2017 and have plenty of usable tread remaining.

This 1981 Sanglas 500 S2 V5 is a rare classic sports bike from a manufacturer who has now sadly faded into relative obscurity.
