1981 MGB GT

KEY FACTS

  • A superb example of the ever-popular classic British sports car, presented in highly original, rust-free condition, having spent close to 40 years in South Africa.
  • Under the bonnet is the 1.8-litre B-Series inline-four, which is driven through the rear wheels via a four-speed manual transmission with overdrive.
  • This MGB GT has spent most of its life in South Africa, and during this time it had only two keepers, the latter of whom acquired it in March 1986 and kept it for 34 years, keeping the car fastidiously maintained.
  • It was then imported into the UK in 2020, when it was acquired by the seller, who re-registered it with the DVLA in April 2021.

EQUIPMENT AND FEATURES

  • This MGB GT left the factory finished in Leyland White with orange and brown cloth-upholstered seats, which have since been retrimmed in black vinyl.
  • The car is thought to be entirely original, save for its headlight grilles / stone guards, modern JVC radio/CD player and Kenwood speakers, which are mounted in the boot.
  • It rides on the correct set of 14-inch Rostyle pressed steel wheels, which feature some very minor blemishes on their rims, but are otherwise in great shape.
  • The car will be accompanied by its original owner’s manual and tool kit, as well as a small history file documenting its prior maintenance.

CONDITION

  • No known body damage, and the vendor reports that it appears to be rust-free.
  • The Leyland White paintwork is in particularly impressive condition given its age, with no substantial marks or blemishes to note.
  • Inside, the cabin is very smart indeed, and the seats are in great shape, having been previously retrimmed in black vinyl. As is to be expected given the car’s age, there are some light signs of wear to the interior trim, and the black paint is flaking from the automatic gear selector, but this does not detract from this MGB GT’s classic charm.
  • Furthermore, the dashboard is emblazoned with a number of stickers which document the car’s attendance at various shows in South Africa.
  • There are no known electrical or mechanical faults.
  • The car’s first UK MOT test was conducted on 12 February 2021, which resulted in a clean pass after the rear brakes were adjusted and the nearside track rod end ball joint dust cover was replaced.

SERVICE HISTORY

  • Although it has evidently been maintained to a good standard, the car is not supplied with any prior service history paperwork.

SUMMARY

This late-production MGB GT is a fine example of the classic sports coupe, presented in highly original and impressive condition. Mechanically, this GT remains as it left the factory, and will make a fine weekend cruiser or a smart classic car show companion.
