1981 MG B ROADSTER

KEY FACTS

  • A usable example of the quintessential classic British sports car with only three owners from new.
  • Powered by the 1.8-litre B-Series four-cylinder engine, which drives the rear wheels via a four-speed manual transmission (it is equipped with overdrive, but this is not currently functioning).

EQUIPMENT AND OPTIONS

  • This MG B Roadster left the factory finished with Leyland White paintwork, but has since been repainted in the bright red hue seen today.
  • It rides on a set of 14-inch chromed wire wheels, which feature some general surface corrosion but are undamaged.
  • The car will be supplied with various parts invoices from the 1980s and a number of its past insurance certificates.

CONDITION

  • The bodywork is undamaged, however there is paint blistering along the sills, wheel arches and beneath the chrome trim strips along the flanks.
  • Having previously been resprayed, the paintwork is in fair order, also showing some stone chips around the car and a scuff on the passenger-side of the rear bumper.
  • The black canvas convertible hood presents well, with general fading to its surface but no rips, tears or other damage.
  • The interior is in good order, with a light patina throughout. However, the vinyl on the top of the dashboard is beginning to lift and the seats’ foam padding would benefit from renewing in due course. The carpets are very smart, having been replaced in June 2016.
  • The vendor notes that the overdrive unit is not functioning, but there are no other known electrical or mechanical faults.
  • This MG B’s last MOT test was conducted on 23 October 2020 at 40,099 miles, resulting in a clean pass after issues with the front position lamps, rear registration plate lamp and rear brake linkage were attended to.
  • While the car has no recorded service history, the seller states that it starts and drives without issue.

SUMMARY

This MG B Roadster is a charming classic British sports car, which offers an engaging driving experience and ample practicality for long-distance touring. While it would undoubtedly benefit from some refurbishment in due course, this MG B is ready to drive and enjoy immediately, and will make a characterful summer cruiser.
